Billy Ocean – When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

Written by Wayne Braithwaite, Willy Head, Barry Eastmond, Robert John “Mutt” Lange and Billy Ocean, “When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going” was used as the theme song for the Michael Douglas film, The Jewel of the Nile, the sequel to the hit blockbuster film, Romancing the Stone.

Aided by a video featuring Douglas and co-stars Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito as lip-synching backup singers, the song became a major international hit reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks in February 1986 and number two on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

In 1994, the song was used for a clip of the 1986 edition of the BBC The Rock ‘n’ Roll Years featuring coverage of the People Power Revolution in the Philippines. Three years later, it was also used as a background song in the 1985-86 football season edition of Match of the 80s, during coverage of the challenge Kenny Dalglish faced on his appointment as player-manager of Liverpool F.C..

I think I posted a couple days ago but i just wanted to ask if you can fix some of your links to the older vinyl tracks because they are not working. The billy ocean ones in particular.

Thanks

Thanks, Paul! How about the “Caribbean Queen” 12″ sometime? The 12″ mix is very rare and, as you know, is Billy Ocean’s biggest hit.

Wow, this is great…You have made my day, Paul, first with the Eddy Grant posting and now this! I have been trying to find the Club Mix forever and now here it is! A million thanks to you! I remember when this song came out, I was disappointed that it didn’t get to #1 in Billboard (although it did go to #1 in “Cashbox”.) What a shame. But thanks again….this is something I’ve been looking for a long, long time!

Yeah, Whitney Houston leap-frogged over Billy Ocean with How Will I Know in early ’86 to claim that Billboard #1.
Still, it was a big #2 smash for Billy, ending the year end charts at #31.

I remember that very well – “How Will I Know” jumped from #5 to #1. It was rare in the 80’s to see a song take a jump into #1 from a position from below the Top 3 or 4. Of course, nowadays, songs often take monumental jumps to #1, like Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson, both of whom did it from positions below #90.
