BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985
“Freeway of Love” is a song by American singer Aretha Franklin. It was written by Jeffrey Cohen and Narada Michael Walden and produced by the latter for her thirtieth studio album Who’s Zoomin’ Who? (1985). The song features a notable contribution from Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist from Bruce Springsteen’’s E Street Band. Sylvester, Martha Wash, and Jeanie Tracy provided backup vocals on “Freeway of Love”.
Released as the album’s leading single, it became Franklin’s highest-charting single in twelve years, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while topping the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for five weeks from July 27, 1985, to August 24, 1985.
Owing to the pink Cadillac appearing on the album cover and several times in the lyrics, more than 100 pink Cadillacs accompanied Franklin in her funeral procession in August 2018.
**This 12″ is pressed on pink vinyl and includes the UK vinyl-only “Pink Cadillac Mix” remixed by Alan ‘The Judge’ Coulthard an essential figure in the UK mix-scene due to his work with the DMC.

Just seeing the album cover brings back fond memories of that summer of ’85, and I haven’t even listened to the mix yet 🙂
Thank you very much, PaulT!
I remember hearing this song all over when it came out but I never heard this mix. Thank you Paul. It’s excellent.
This mix was not included in the recent Zoomin’ expanded edition CD, so this is a fantastic addition. Thank you!
I really love this mix. I love these old school mixes. It shows a lot of creativity on the remixer’s part: using what they had available at the time. Plus there is integrity here. And, although the stems of tracks might be available to make a new remix today, a lot I’ve heard pale in comparison to using the original track and versions on the original 12-inch. So much thought, time and effort went into these mixes and we should celebrate them for what they are. A time capsule of remix culture.
I’m just grateful to have this Paul!
Jeff
Thank you for this rare mix. Never heard of this Pink Cadillac Mix before. It’s just mere editing of the extended remix + some sampling overdub. So strange that they released such a poor “remix” for such a big artist like Aretha. I made a remix of this song, it’s on my site.
You’re remixes are fantastic!
Thank you very much Jon 😉
I just found your site and your remixes – amazing!!!
Glad that you found me 🙂
very good work,Pablo, is it possible that you upload a tutorial on how to record and master your files?
Super, gracias Pault.
De Nada, Carlos
I am like the other posters here – a fan of Alan’s work with DMC, but never knew about this remix. Thank you!
You’re welcome, Music collector 🙂
Great song, and great singles from this era, however considering what so many of us are doing currently to stay connected…”Who’s Zoomin’ Who?” might be the song of the moment. (drum roll please) Thank you.
Lol I hear you load and clear Joey 🙂
Thanks for this one! Stay healthy all!
You’re welcome, stay safe 🙂
Fantastic song, fantastic Aretha (LOVE her! Miss her so much) and a great remix. I never new it was an Alan Coulthard remix! That song gives me such a good feeling. The weather is great over here, as well. If that damn virus wasn´t tyrannizing us all everything would be so fine.
I never pray but my best wishes go out to all of you and your families. Be safe, be healthy.
This will go over but we have to be patient and use our brains.
Love and hugs to all of you.
The weather is beautiful here too and very misleading makes you want to go out and be around family/friends but we know that is not possible. I agree with you Song And Dance use you brain do not listen to false politicians. Stay safe and alive 🙂
Thanks, Paul! I have never seen or heard of this mix before. After listening to it, it sounds like Alan didn’t have access to the masters/stems and thus “remixed” this from what he could use in his sampler and the “Extended Remix” that was already out. I’m a pretty big fan of DMC and I don’t think they ever released a Freeway Of Love remix but if they did, I would guess Arista just took it and released it commercially. A few labels have done the same thing with Ultimix and Funkymix remixes such as Paula Abdul’s Straight Up on… Read more »
Epic records did it with Liza Minelli on “Losing My Mind” Ultimix version as well.
Such a fabulous song Paul and makes me think of cruising down the road with the top down! And I’m really excited to hear this remix too as I’m a huge fan of DMC. I was actually listening to a DMC disc as you just posted. Thanks so much Paul for a great record to start the weekend off with!
Have an excellent weekend Paul and everyone too.
Jeff
You’re welcome, Jeff hope you have a fantastic weekend 🙂
Love this song! Thanks Paul!!
