BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981
“Welcome To The Monkey House” is a 1981 single by British New Romantic five-piece band Animal Magnet formed in London in 1980, featuring Paul Caplin and Richard Magnet.
In 1981, the band were a support act for Duran Duran on their first national tour and released their debut single “Tomorrow Will Do”. This was followed by “Welcome to the Monkey House” which didn’t reach the UK Top 40 Chart, but EMI did not delete it for a long time. The reason being it sold weekly in very small amounts and became a club hit in cities including Birmingham.
Paul Caplin left Animal Magnet to become the ‘secret mastermind’ behind the 1980s avant-garde new wave pop project Haysi Fantayzee.

Another example of fine cover art, but..no credits, nothing. And I googled even.
Is it the band photographed, by the way?
Brilliant song, I had the 7″ back in the day but lost it somewhere between England & New Zealand! So thank you very much.
What a lost treasure you unearthed here.
Thanks Paul.
I must once again congratulate you Paul on another successful Totally Obscure 80s week. It’s 5/5 to you so far for me. I don’t know how you manage to mine so much stuff that is genuinely obscure, it really is quite a delight.
That cover is awesome. It would have certainly been banned if it had actually charted.
Didn’t know that Haysi Fantayzee had a secret mastermind either.
It’s an awesome track, for sure – I only heard it a couple years ago, when someone asked me “Why isn’t this out anywhere?”. Since then, it’s been put on a couple streaming 80s compilations, as well as Gary Crowley’s excellent recent Lost 80s – but I’m sure the most pristine version is here. Thanks!
Just based on the title alone, I love this record. Very cool information regarding this 12-inch Paul. And I was all over the fact that Paul Caplin was involved with Haysi Fantayzee. I love that band, so I think I’ll really like this band. Very cool of you pulling out these fantastic pieces Paul. I so love the different!!
Jeff
Such a cool track that I think may new wave lovers will enjoy. Hope you like this one Jeff. 🙂
Thanks Paul.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
