Scarlett & Black – You Don’t Know (UK 12″) (1986)

Burning The Ground Exclusive

Scarlett & Black return to Burning The Ground today with the original UK 12″ of “You Don’t Know.” I previously posted the US 12″ in January 2014, but this edition features the earlier Extended Version produced by Daize Washbourne and Phil Harding, which was not included on that American release.

The British duo consisted of Robin Hild and Sue West. Hild had played keyboards with Big Supreme, while West had worked as a backing vocalist for Doctor and the Medics. Together as Scarlett & Black, they paired melodic pop songwriting with electronic production. “You Don’t Know” became their best-known single.

The song first appeared on MDM Records in 1986, ahead of the duo’s self-titled debut album on Virgin in 1987. Its American success followed in 1988, when it reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. No chart placing has been verified for the original 1986 MDM release, so those later chart achievements should be distinguished from the edition featured here.

This UK 12″ offers the five-minute Extended Version from the original Washbourne and Harding production. The later US edition featured a different selection, including the 12″ Mix, Dub Mix, and a remix by John Morales and Sergio Munzibai. For listeners familiar with those versions, this earlier release adds another chapter to the song’s history. The B-side features the Extended Version of “Japan,” produced by Robin Hild.

Nearly thirteen years after sharing the US release, I’m pleased to bring this UK edition to BTG and give its Extended Version a place alongside those later mixes.

Wow, this is so fun! The galloping beat and chiming synth sound reminds me of another favorite 80s act, Sophie & Peter Johnston

Thanks for the great rip, Paul! I haven’t heard this in ages. Any chance anybody here has the original 2014 post that Paul shared? I can be reached at old_remixit at yahoo dot com. Thanks again, Paul!

Fascinating… I mainly remember this song from the music video! Although I do have the song on a Living In Oblivion 80’s CD!
I can’t say as I know any other music by them, but I could be wrong!!!
The artwork for this is akin to what I’d expect of something coming out years later honestly, very interesting indeed! Can’t wait to dive in!
Thanks!

Hi Paul, I’m so happy you’re back. It’s awful how you have to go through such things. I realize more than ever how much the fundraisers are so important to the survival of Burning The Ground. One shouldn’t take your generosity for granted. You have created the best place on the internet for high-quality rips of beloved twelve-inch dance discs and other sonic delights. I’m forever grateful to you and FOR YOU!!!! I love this song, Paul. It’s been a favorite of mine ever since its debut in 1986. I see that it’s the import 12-inch and not the US… Read more »

This bouncy, fun song oddly reflects how I felt watching the midterms last night… 🙂
