Fleetwood Mac – Big Love (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

Re-Rip Remastered

I originally posted this 12″ in March of 2010 on the old Blogger site. Since originally ripping the single I have purchased newer equipment and improved some of my ripping technique. I decided that since I am doing a Fleetwood Mac series that I would revisit this 12″ and update the rip. This 12″ is also being offered in 24bit lossless for the first time. Enjoy!

“Big Love” is a song by Fleetwood Mac, that appeared on their 1987 album Tango in the Night. The song was the first single to be released from the album, reaching number five on the U.S. charts, and number nine in the UK. The single was also a hit on the American dance charts, where the song peaked at number seven.

A 12-inch version featured an extended dance mix, with added vocals by Stevie Nicks. While the 12-inch version included “You & I, Part II” from the Tango in the Night album, the 7-inch version included an non-album track, “You & I, Part I”. A limited edition 12-inch picture disc was released in the UK, as well as a double 7-inch pack, which contained the “Big Love” single, and an exclusive 7-inch featuring “The Chain” as an A-side.

“Big Love” was written by Lindsey Buckingham, and was originally going to be part of his third solo album which he began working on in 1985, but the project became a Fleetwood Mac album instead. The song epitomised the stylised production techniques used on the album, with its provocative “oh – ahh” male/female vocal exchange. Though many assumed the female “ahh” to be Stevie Nicks, it was actually Lindsey Buckingham performing both, created by way of his voice being sampled and altered in the studio to mimic that of a woman. The sample was aired several times on Late Night with David Letterman, where Letterman told viewers they were hearing the sounds of CPR.

Since Buckingham left Fleetwood Mac in 1987 (shortly after Tango in the Night was released), the band never performed “Big Love” live until his return in 1997. It was in 1993, on his first solo tour, that Buckingham performed a stripped down guitar-only version of the song. In 1997, he performed it in the same style on Fleetwood Mac’s live album and video The Dance, as well as also appearing on the second volume of Cameron Crowe’s Elizabethtown film soundtrack. Buckingham continues to perform the song on Fleetwood Mac and solo tours.

Special note about this single: First pressings of this 12″ had the label missprinted to show that it portrayed having “You and I (Part 1)I”, as the B-side. This is incorrect, the single actually contains the album track “You and I (Part 2)”. Later editions had this corrected on the label. This problem also exists of the Canadian edition of the single. *As a bonus track I have included “Big Love (Remix Edit)” taken from the US 12″ promo Warner Bros. PRO-A-2723.

Stevie Nicks – Rooms On Fire (Europ 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

“Rooms on Fire” is a song by the American singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks. Released in May 1989, it was the first single to be taken from Nicks’ fourth solo album, The Other Side of the Mirror.

The song was quite successful on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching #16 in both the UK (Nicks’ first ever UK Top 40 solo hit and her highest chart position there to date) and the U.S. Billboard Chart, and also topped the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

“Rooms on Fire” was performed sporadically at Nicks’ live concerts up until New Year’s Eve of 1999, though has yet to be played live again.

In a 1989 interview, Nicks gave personal insight as to the meaning of “Rooms on Fire”:

“Rooms on Fire is about a girl who goes through a life like I have gone through, where she finally accepts the idea that there never will be those other things in her life. She will never be married, she will never have children, she will never do those [that] part of life.”

Stevie Nicks – Edge Of Seventeen (Live) (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

“Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove)” is a song written and recorded by American singer Stevie Nicks, the third single from her successful 1981 solo debut album Bella Donna. Written by Nicks to express the grief resulting from the death of her uncle Jonathan and the murder of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980, the song features a distinctive, chugging 16th-note guitar riff, and a simple chord structure typical of Nicks’s songs.

Released as a single in early 1982, it just missed out on the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 making #11 and the live version on the B-side reached #26 on Billboard’s Top Tracks chart. The album track had previously made the Top 5 of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart in 1981, peaking at number four. It is one of Nicks’ most enduring and recognizable songs, and has been covered by many artists. The distinctive riff was sampled by Destiny’s Child in their 2001 song “Bootylicious”, with Nicks in a cameo appearance in the music video, playing a guitar.

According to Nicks, the title came from a conversation she had with Tom Petty’s first wife, Jane, about the couple’s first meeting. Jane said they met “at the age of seventeen,” but her strong Southern accent made it sound like “edge of seventeen” to Nicks. The singer liked the sound of the phrase so much that she told Jane she would write a song for it and give her credit for the inspiration.

Although Nicks originally planned to use the title for a song about Tom and Jane Petty, the deaths of her uncle Jonathan and of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980 inspired a new song for which Nicks used the title. Nicks’ producer and friend Jimmy Iovine was a close friend of Lennon, and Nicks felt helpless to comfort him. Soon after, she flew home to Phoenix, Arizona, to be with her uncle Jonathan, who was dying of cancer. She remained with her uncle and his family until his death.

Throughout the song a distinctive 16th note guitar riff is played by Waddy Wachtel, progressing through C, D, and E-Minor chords. During the bridge, the chords alternate twice between E-Minor and C. Wachtel claimed that a track by The Police called “Bring on the Night” was the inspiration for the riff.

As is typical of Nicks’ songs, the lyrics are highly symbolic. Nicks has said that the white-winged dove represents the spirit leaving the body on death, and some of the verses capture her experience of the days leading up to her uncle Jonathan’s death.

Perhaps ironic for a song named for a mondegreen, the line “Just like a white-winged dove” is sometimes misheard as “Just like a one-winged dove” or “just like the world we know”, thus “Edge of Seventeen” has been cited frequently as a source of misheard lyrics since its release, and appears on a number of misheard lyrics web sites and in books of famous misheard lyrics.

This US 12″ promo contains previously un-released live versions of “Edge Of Seventeen” recorded at The Wilshire Theatre, Los Angeles, on December 13th 1981.
