Diana Ross – Love Hangover ’89 (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

Disco Love week

“Love Hangover” was the fourth number one single for Motown singer Diana Ross. Ross originally recorded “Love Hangover” in 1975. It was released in March 1976 and rose to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Soul Singles and Hot Dance Club Play charts simultaneously.

The song was written by Pamela Sawyer and Marilyn McLeod as a disco number. Producer Hal Davis recorded the instrumental track in 1975 thinking it ideal for Marvin Gaye or Diana Ross, who were his two favorite vocalists to work with. He thought Diana would be sexier on it, so he recorded the song with her. Studio musicians included James Gadson on drums, Henry E. Davis (of the band L.T.D.) on bass, and Joe Sample on keyboards.

Hal Davis instructed the song’s engineer Russ Terrana to install a strobe light so that Ross could be in the “disco” mindset. As the song changed from ballad to uptempo, Ross became more comfortable with the material; she hummed, sang bit parts, laughed, danced around and even imitated Billie Holiday. The carefree and sensual nature of Ross’ vocals and the music’s direction helped to sell the song, in addition to the background vocals relying heavily on Donna Summer’s 1975 hit “Love to Love You Baby”.

In 1989 Motown re-released the song as “Love Hangover ’89” with brand new remixes by PWL team Phil Harding & Ian Curnow. This version peaked at #3 on the Billboard Dance chart on April 8, 1989, after spending nine weeks on the survey.

Mary Wilson – Red Hot (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1979

Mary Wilson (born March 6, 1944) is an American singer, who gained fame as a founding member of the Motown female singing group The Supremes during the 1960s and 1970s. Wilson was the only singer to be a consistent member of the group in its eighteen-year tenure.

In 1979, Wilson became involved in a protracted legal battle with Motown over their management of the Supremes. After an out-of-court settlement, Motown signed Wilson to the label. In August 1979, Wilson’s debut solo album entiltled Mary Wilson was released with material produced by Hal Davis. The album took Wilson’s solo work further into a mixture of R&B and disco. The album’s lead single, “Red Hot”, peaked at #95 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. An extended version of “Red Hot” made available as a 12-inch single earned the song a #85 spot on the disco charts in October 1979.
