Total Coelo – Milk From The Coconut (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on 17th June 2011

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

Toto Coelo (Total Coelo in the US) were brought together by producer Barry Blue. Original members were Anita Mahadervan, Lacey Bond, Lindsey Danvers, Ros Holness and Sheen Doran. The group’s name is Latin and means ‘by the whole extent of the heavens’ or ‘heaven-wide’, but is commonly translated as ‘completely’, ‘entirely’ or ‘utterly’. Of the name, Sheen Doran said, ‘It has a number of meanings, such as ‘heart and soul’, ‘root and branch’ and ‘totally different’. It seemed to describe what we were. Plus, it’s strange-sounding and hard to pronounce, so it sticks in your mind.’

In the US “Milk From The Coconut” was the follow up single to “I Eat Canibals” but the song failed to ahieve the same success and did not chart in the UK or the US but did peak at #100 in Australia.

Total Coelo – I Eat Cannibals (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on 23rd October 2010

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

Known in the USA as “TOTAL” Coelo (to avoid confusion with the pop band “TOTO”) and most everywhere else as “TOTO” Coelo.

“I Eat Cannibals” reached #8 in the UK, AUS #4, US #66, NZ #38 the song was also a hit in South Africa where it was named the 17th biggest selling single of 1983. The solid drum sound that under pins the single were provided by session drummer Peter Boita. Peter received a demo cassette from producer Barry Blue and proceeded to score out a drum part that fitted the song. Peter programmed his Linndrum Computer with the basic drumbeat that’s heard throughout the record Peter thenoverdubbed Simmons SDS7 electronic drums over the top of the basic drumbeat to add extra weight to the already exciting drum beat. Peter, by this time, had perfected a technique of playing all four Simmons pads simultaneously to produce an amazing depth of drum sound with just one hit of his drumsticks. Peter Boita also used this same technique on the follow up song Mucho Macho, but, apart from a few television appearances by the girls, the single failed to make much impression on the charts of the day.
