Record Store Day 2011

Posted by DjPaulT on 14th April 2011

Let’s face it folks: we like music. We love it. We wanna take it home uwrap it and love it some more. And if you’re hardcore music geeks like me, you like physical music. You like to hold a record sleeve in your hands and admire the album art. You like the smell of the cardboard record sleeve and the way the wax circle just barely slides right in and out. You can’t frame an ultra-rare mp3 and hang it up on your wall, now can you? Sure, we all like the portability and ease of digital music in the iPod era, but every once in a while, it’s a good thing to reflect on exactly what music means to us–as individuals, as a culture, as a species–and celebrate it in all its glory. This is (part of) the goal of Record Store Day, sure, but at the end of the day, it’s really all about this: get out there on this Saturday April 16, 2011, mingle with your fellow music lovers, and support your local independent record stores!

A Little History:

Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the third Saturday of April each year. Its purpose, as conceived by independent record store employee Chris Brown, is to celebrate the art of music[1]. The day brings together fans, artists, and the over 700 independently owned record stores in the United States, along with hundreds of independent record stores across the world.

Record Store Day was officially founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner and is now celebrated globally with hundreds of recording and other artists participating in the day by making special appearances, performances, meet and greets with their fans, the holding of art exhibits, and the issuing of special vinyl and CD releases along with other promotional products to mark the occasion.
