Billy Idol – Eyes Without A Face (Japan 12″)

A. Front

“Eyes Without a Face” is a song by Billy Idol, co-written with guitarist Steve Stevens from Idol’s 1983 album Rebel Yell. The song is softer and more ballad-like than most of the album’s other singles.

Released on 29 May 1984, this was the second single from the Rebel Yell album. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Idol’s first Top 10 hit in the US. In the UK the single peaked at #18.

In the liner notes for the Expanded Edition of Rebel Yell, Idol notes that this song was one of the first three written for the album (the other two being the title track and “(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows.”) The original track was recorded in Studio A at Electric Lady Studios in New York, with a Linn drum machine and the bass parts played by Steve Webster.

The song is notable for the female voice of Perri Lister that sings ‘Les yeux sans visage’ (French for ‘eyes without a face’) as a background chorus.

The title of the song refers to French director Georges Franju’s movie Les yeux sans visage (1960).

In a retrospective review of the single, Allmusic journalist Donald A. Guarisco praised the song. He wrote: “The music plays against the dark tone of the lyrics with a ballad-styled melody comprised of yearning verses that slowly build emotion and a quietly wrenching chorus that relieves the emotional tension in a cathartic manner.

A. Front

“Cradle of Love” is a rock song written by Billy Idol and David Werner for Idol’s 1990 fourth studio album Charmed Life. The song is the album’s sixth track, and was released as its first single. The song became one of Idol’s biggest hits in the United States, where it reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, but stalled at No. 34 in Idol’s native UK Single Chart. It was also Idol’s first, and (so far) only No. 1 hit on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the U.S.

The song was featured on the soundtrack of The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. It was nominated for Rock Vocal Performance, Male at the 32nd Grammy Awards. It was well received by critics, and was frequently cited as a highlight of the album.

Billy Idol – To Be A Lover (Rock N’ Roll Mix) (Australia Ltd. Edition 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on 25th March 2013

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

A. Front

“To Be a Lover” is a song by Billy Idol from his 1986 album Whiplash Smile. As the album’s lead single, it became Idol’s second top 10 hit in the US, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track was the second high profile cover Idol had released as a single, after 1981’s “Mony Mony.”

The single was backed by Whiplash Smile album track “All Summer Single” and featured two remixes of the A-side – “Mother of Mercy Mix” and “Rock’n’Roll Mix”.

Special note about this single: The “Rock N’ Roll Mix” is exclusive to this Australian release and as far as I know has not appeared on any other official Billy Idol release. The mix did appear on a So80s compilation but was transfered from vinyl.

Billy Idol – White Wedding (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on 18th October 2012

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

R E Q U E S T

“White Wedding” is a song by Billy Idol that appeared on his album Billy Idol (1982). Although “The Big 80’s: Episode I” of VH1’s Pop-Up Video trivia show claims Idol wrote the song to voice his displeasure with his sister’s fiancé (who impregnated her before marrying her), on an episode of VH1 Storytellers, Idol claimed that there was never any family resentment towards his sister, and that the song was simply heightened fantasy and nothing more.

It is often considered one of his most recognisable songs, although other Idol songs charted higher. It reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 on its original release, and reached #6 in the UK upon its re-release there in 1985, when it was reissued to promote the Vital Idol remix album.
