The B-52’s – Channel Z (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on February 24th, 2017

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

“Channel Z” is a single by The B-52’s from their 1989 album Cosmic Thing. The song was the first single from Cosmic Thing, but did not achieve as much success as the follow-ups “Love Shack” and “Roam.” The single was reissued with a new 12″ Mix after these two singles and before “Deadbeat Club.”

The song was about a fictional radio station whose motto was “Channel Z: All Static, All Day, Forever!”.

The song peaked at number 61 on the UK Singles Chart. In the US, it topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The song’s music video features The B-52’s playing on stage in front of an audience, along with clips of them running through a forest. It was shot outside of New York City, according to the credits of The B-52’s 1979–1989.

Thanks, Paul! I’ve never heard the Rock Dub before. Myself, I’m partial to the Frankie Foncett mix that appears on some import pressings.

I know you got the description from Wikipedia, but I chuckle at the description that the song is about a “fictional radio station.” Far too literal. The message is so much bigger than that.

    Have a great weekend!

Another psychic moment again, Paul!! Karen and I were just talking about The B-52’s this morning!! Just incredible. You are so tapped into the “Music Matrix” with all of your fans. I love this song, especially the part: “Where’s my Umbrella?” I am about to swoon!! And I love the cover of this 12-inch. Looking forward to the dub as well. You are an Audio Angel and an Audiophile Angel too. Goosebumps on top of Goosebumps!!!

Phew!! Have an incredible weekend, Paul!!

Paul, this is a lovely addition to your canon. Excited to hear a couple of mixes that were previously unavailable to me. This album was such a big part of my high school years in the mid-south. Great memories!

    Thank you so much.

I started college early during the summer after the 10th grade and the college radio station played this A LOT … loved it!

I am surprised this wasn’t a bigger hit.

It should have been re-released as the last single off COSMIC THING (sort of like “Knocked Out” by Paula Abdul).
