“Paninaro” is a song by English synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys. Originally a B-side to the 1986 single “Suburbia”, it was released as a limited-edition single in Italy during the same year. “Paninaro” was produced by the band themselves, and is the first track which features Chris Lowe on lead vocals, although he speaks the lyrics, rather than sings them.

While all 7″ and 12″ releases of “Suburbia” contained only the 7″ version of “Paninaro”, the 12″ version was featured on “Disco: The Remix Album”. Another remix by Ian Levine was done, but only appears as the second track from the Italian 12″ single.

“Paninaro” was written entirely by Chris Lowe, and was originally based on an idea brought forth by Tom Watkins, who later removed himself from the project. The Paninari is the name of a 1980s Italian youth subculture known as the paninari; derived from the word panino, Italian for sandwich, they were known for congregating in restaurants serving sandwiches and in the first US-style fast food restaurants, as well as their preference for designer clothing and 1980s pop music such as the New Romantic music of Duran Duran. Neil Tennant has said that they were drawn to the concept due to having shared those preferences.

The band wanted to remove Versace from the lyrics because Vercase was not really a designer favoured by the Paninari, but it was edited out of every version except the 12″

There was in fact a video shot for ‘Paninaro’, even though it wasn’t a bonafide single. It featured shots taken around Milan and fed through a digital imaging processor to give it a pixelated feel. It was released originally on the “Television” video compilation and again on the “Pop Art” DVD.

“Paninaro” was remixed and released a second time in 1995 as “Paninaro 95” in conjunction with the b-sides compilation “Alternative”.

I can tell how much a song means to you Paul by noticing how you choose to re-rip old postings. One can never go wrong with vintage Pet Shop Boys!! I first discovered this track from their (still) superior remix album, “Disco: The Remix Collection.” This song has a very hypnotic and haunting quality to it. I love singing along with “The Boys” as this is such an earworm one can’t escape from. I still think I prefer the original version compared to Ian Levine’s remix, but it’s so cool to have it from you. I love these precious gifts from you Paul. We should never take you and your music for granted. You are a wunderkind with fabulous tastes and all the best alternative mixes. I can’t wait to submerge myself within your sonics of this new rip. You still (and always will) amaze me with your choices and execution. Everyday is a holiday with you Paul. You are one sparkling gentleman!! A real jewel with your polished gems that jam!!

    Most affectionately,

    Jeff

To me – and I’m italian,i was in the beginning of my teenage yeras back then,I knew what was socially a clturally a “Paninaro” as a person and as a movement fashon-addicted – is one of the worst Pet’s tune ever!
Never liked it,always found it really dreadful!Anyway thanks to Paul that ripped this for lovers of the song.

You’re fully entitled to consider it that way,Paul,of course. 😉
So are the others commenters who liked it too,of course.
To my point of view “easily one of their top singles” is a sentence to be used for other songs.
    Very,very far form this crap.

It looks like they use downloads to entice people to enter their credit card details! It’s a scam so I hope no one has been fooled as it could cost them a lot of money in fraud!

  12. John Says:

Always love The Pet Shops Boys music, I’ve heard a rumour on various sites that their later albums (Further Listening) will be released on the Warner label, I really hope they re-release Please, Actually, Introspective and Behaviour (Further Listening 2cd versions), these are the four albums I grew up with in my teens.
West End Sunglasses was a cd import single that I played a lot in it’s day, the other track was One More Chance (Dub Mix).
The other day I heard a intrumental (Introspective version) of I’m Not Scared which I didn’t think was ever released ? I’m after the Eighth Wonder/Patsy Kensit I’m Not Scared (Dub Version), which I cannot find anywhere, I use to buy a lot of 12″ promos in their day, but never kept them pristine like you Paul, so a great job on restoring these fantastic gems for everyone to listen too.
Fingers crossed that their 1988 film It Couldn’t Happen Here gets a dvd or blu ray release this year.

    DjPaulT Reply:

I think I heard that rumor also John. Would love to see that film get a proper DVD or Blu-ray release as well. I might have the Eighth Wonder single in storage I will look 🙂

There’s another Ian Levine mix – dub mix.
It was unreleased like the 2 dub versions of In The Night.

  17. mjb Says:

Your old rip was great but did have some distorted sibilants in the Ian Levine mix; you can hear it in the right channel when there’s just finger snaps and hi-hats in the break near the end of the song. The hi-hats go slightly more “tsh” instead of a nice clean “tss”. This new rip is distortion-free! It sounds awesome! Thanks for taking the time to re-rip it!

  18. MusicMan3 Says:

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting, I’ve never heard this song before, only having been familiar with PSB’s mainstream hits. This is a really great track and I love the remixes. Really great rip too – absolutely pristine. Thank you for your hard work on your posts. All the best!
