Pet Shop Boys – In The Night (7″ Edit Version) (Germany 7″ Promo)

Posted by DjPaulT on November 18th, 2016

“In the Night” is a song by UK duo Pet Shop Boys, about the subculture known as the Zazous, which appeared in France during the German occupation of France in World War II; concerned with fashion and music, and allied with neither the Nazis and Vichy France nor the French Resistance, they were distrusted by both sides. Tennant, having read about the movement in a book by David Pryce-Jones, asks, in the song, the question of whether this apathy essentially amounted to collaborationism.

The song was scheduled to be released as a single in Germany on March 4, 1987 but was withdrawn with only a 7″ promo being issued. The Artur Baker 7″ edit is exclusive to this release and has never appeared on CD to the best of my knowledge. The full Arthur Baker mix appeared on the album “DISCO”.

The same mix appears on both sides.

One of my fave Pet Shop Boys tune, though there are many more. This was used by the BBC as the theme tune to “The Clothes Show” TV programme.
Many thanks for this anyway Paul.

    DjPaulT Reply:

They used an instrumental version for that show from what I have read 🙂

  4. Jeff Says:

Like all the others commenting above, this is definitely one of my favorite Pet Shop Boys singles. I’m flipping out because it is the 7-inch edit of Arthur Baker’s awesome version of the tune. I sometimes love shortened versions of classic twelve inch mixes. Especially in this time with the ADHD mentality, short mixes please a lot of my friends who can’t really appreciate the extended and remixed full length versions that I adore. Oh Paul, again and again you come through with only the best. It’s like you are the very clone of all my tastes. PLUS, I always like this song played around Halloween. You actually include it on your wonderful Halloween mix CD. Thank you once more for this tremendous version.

    Have a great weekend!!!

One of my all-time favorite PSB songs and mixes. I agree with you some folks especially now days can’t take listening to more than three minutes. Thank goodness for the 80s 12″ mix. Have a great weekend Jeff 🙂

  5. Junior Says:

Enjoyed your PSB posts over the years. I have quite a few 7″ vinyl releases from the duo, but not this one.

    Thanks Paul 🙂

    You’re welcome Junior 🙂

  6. Marko Says:

    Yes Yes Yes,
thanks so much for Pet Shop Boys.
The Full Length Arthur Baker Mix appeared as a B-Side to the Paninaro95 CD Single.

    DjPaulT Reply:

The even longer Arthur Baker mix is on “Disco”.

    Ziv Reply:

Also exists: 2x unreleased Arthur Baker dub mixes.

  7. Joey Says:

Wow Paul. This is a surprise. This is a great song and a has a message that is still relevant today. I believe the version on Paninaro ’95 is a re-remix, as PSB were going to release In The Night as an updated single, eventually re-recording it as an instrumental for the clothes show, but before they did that they tried working with the original multitracks to see what they could get, after re-mixing the song they stopped. If you listen to that mix from 1995 you will notice how much more complex the mix is compared to the Arthur Baker mix or something that was technically possible in 1985.
Back to this one, I am really impressed here, as a fellow PSB collector this is definitely one of those “Holy Grail” releases. Thanks for giving us a chance to hear it in the best possible quality, a definite treat.

    DjPaulT Reply:

It really is a rarity Joey and I paid for it dearly but it’s one of my favorite items. I love when a record gets a limited release with a unique sleeve and mix. Thanks for all the info 🙂

    To clear things up:

In The Night (7″ Edit Version) 3:39
    is an edit of the:

In The Night (Arthur Baker Remix) 6.25
which appears on the Pet Shop Boys ‎– Disco (The Pet Shop Boys Remix Album)

In The Night (Arthur Baker Remix) 4.24
which appears on the Pet Shop Boys ‎– Paninaro ’95 CD Single CD2
    (and other PSB releases)
Is also an edit of the In The Night (Arthur Baker Remix) 6.25
has a slightly different arrangement then the 6.25 version,
but the last minute of the 6.25 and 4.24 version is completely identical,
only the 4.24 version has a much louder mastering.

I checked all 3 versions in an audio editor.

    In The Night ’95 4.17
which appears on the Pet Shop Boys ‎– Before CD Single CD1
    (and other PSB releases)
Is an instrumental 90s Euro-Dance style version
Completely different then the Arthur Baker Remix!

Yes. With the PSBoys, I have considered myself an expert until Paul blows my mind with this biz again and again. Hats off.

  9. AnthonyC Says:

As a coincidence I’ve been listening to this mix loads lately.

I guess most people won’t know how rare this 7inch promo actually is.

It’s a shame the 30th Anniversary of Please was cancelled as otherwise we would have had this on CD 🙁

    Thank you!

    DjPaulT Reply:

    You are very welcome AnthonyC.

  10. Jon Lorenz Says:

Never thought I would get to hear this! Bravo and thanks! A PSB release on Burning the Ground always makes our day! Astounding. Thank you.

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Jon Lorenz stay tuned there are many more to come 🙂

  11. memoryboy Says:

AMAZING!!!! Now this is a RARE edit that I never even knew existed. I also love 7″ edits and single mixes. I love the extended remixes as well, but 7″ single edits are also valuable, and this one here is such a treasure. Thank you so much for posting this one! Made my day.

  12. Marc Says:

Thanks a lot for this Pet Shop Boys Rarity.
Now we need the Holiday Pack finally 🙂

  13. Ben Says:

Perfect timing, Just saw Pet Shop Boys in Miami for the Super Tour. Simply Amazing.

  14. Daniel Says:

One of my fave PSB songs, and I love that they are performing it on their current tour. Thanks for sharing this! While I do love a lot of Extended 12-inch mixes, I’ve always preferred the 7-inch or Radio Edit versions…

  15. Stephen Says:

I recently joined Discogs and have been blown away at the community there. Looks like you’re going to be providing me with a lot of items to add to my wish list for when I win the lotto! 🙂

  16. Davos Via 45 Says:

Didn’t listen to this song for years, maybe it wasn’t single material. but an awesome Hi-NRG track. You can clearly hear Bobby Orlando’s influence, just check out The Flirts – Passion!

  17. Erik C Says:

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! An absolutely wonderful start to my weekend!

Co-incidentally, I just received their latest three 12″-ers the other day – too bad I don’t own a turntable, but as an avid fan, what can you do to support your favourites? 🙂

Have a nice weekend and keep the great music coming – I love what you are doing!

    Song And Dance Reply:

I buy everything PSB. Like you I am proud owner of the Pop Kids, Say It To Me and the Inner Sanctum 12inch. All mint and still wrapped of course although I do cherish my record player. I listen to the downloads… 🙂

  18. Jermajesty Says:

Fantastico – I love it when you do the odd 7″ Paul – thank you. 🙂

  19. Goatmeal Says:

While not an “official release,” it _is_ present on the Ultra Rate Trax Vol. 1 CD (1993). Found it (and Vol. 2) in an eclectic music shop while in college at the time.

However, I recall the sound quality of the two compilations to be be quite lacking (as most bootlegs tend to be), so it’s always good to have a nice clean copy like this.

And as always, your efforts rescuing these lost gems are much appreciated.

    Goatmeal Reply:

Sorry, that should be “Ultra Rare Trax Vol. 1,” not Rate.

  20. Richard the Big Bunny Says:

Despite being a PSB fan, this was not in my iTunes.

I only know it from The Clothes Show.

    Added now.
