BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

a-front

This record has my tears on it but I do believe that Pete would want us to celebrate his life and music. Rest in peace Pete.

“It’s Been Hours Now” is the first 12″ EP released by Dead Or Alive on Ian Broudies Black Eyes label in 1982. The tracks on this EP were recorded well before the band signed with a major label. According to front man Pete Burns they recorded the tracks to help finance the purchase of a sequencer so that he could turn his songs into disco records. In 1984 they would release their debut album “Sophisticated Boom Boom” on Epic Records.

I just knew you’d have a DOA post for us today! Many thanks. Of course i saw his manager’s Facebook post very early in the process (6pm UK time 24/10) and didn’t believe it to be real. Thought someone had hacked his account. Especially as it was only 4 days from the release of the box set (i ordered the signed one). RIP Pete Burns, legend! I’m guessing by the time the news broke you had already began work on yesterday’s post but scrapped it out of respect to make the news and subsequent record post a priority?

i was working on another post when I got the sad news yesterday. I also thought it was a joke and checked the DOA official facebook page and saw that Steve Coy had confirmed it. I decided to post this today because music is a healer and I think Pete would want us to celebrate.

Sigh….Thank you Paul for this single and for your beautiful heart. What better way to pay tribute to Pete than with this debut single. It is a touching gesture to someone we all miss very, very much.

    Most Sincerely,

    Jeff

Thank you Paul. When I read the news I was shocked. This site has always served as a real testament to the DOA 12″ and you have not let us down here. These recordings have languished in obscurity for years and it is nice to see you give these your special touch. Music does heal, but when they are gone they are gone… In his last interview he mentioned re-recording these songs, it would have been interesting to see his new spin on things. With their early sound echoing flourishes of The Doors, I have always wondered if Dead or Alive was a play on the Jim Morrison dead or alive conspiracy theory.

Thank you Joey. I read in a magazine Billboard maybe that Pete named the band Dead Or Alive ten minutes before going onto a radio show in 1982. Not sure why he chose that name but I am glad he did. I read that article as well about wanting to re-record these tracks that would have been very interesting to hear.

Paul the losses are irreparable, one learns to live with the lost (this year we had big losses in the music scene), you’re a great person, with a beautiful sensitivity, and if it is true music is able to cure everything, We have lost another great of the music scene and the best thing left is the beautiful memory of having danced, laughed and enjoyed with Pete Burns and his music (Dead or Alive)

    A big Hug, Regards

    Rafa

A very sweet post Paul. Early DoA so often overlooked, but an interesring chapter. Sad that we’re hearing it in these circumstances, but it’s a lovely tribute. Thank you. xx

I’m still sad about Pete loss. I heard DOA Music during my school years. I think that “Flowers” (an early b side) would be an appropriate song for him. Rest in peace my dear Pete. 🙁
Thanks Paul as always. You’re a kind soul for share this early gem

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you Julio. I agree “Flowers” is very fitting I have it but it’s not ready for posting maybe I will do another tribute later.
