12 Inches of “Sex…”

“Sex (I’m A…)” is a song by the American band Berlin from their second album Pleasure Victim. The song was co-written by group members John Crawford, Terri Nunn and David Diamond and sung as a duet by Crawford and Nunn.

Released as the album’s second single in February 1983, the single became a cult hit on American radio and brought the group into the mainstream. Despite the significant attention, the song’s racy lyrics resulted in it being banned from several radio stations. Perhaps because of this, the single ultimately peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in late March and early April 1983.The song was also the first single release from the band’s new label, Geffen Records.

As a bonus I have included the “Instrumental Version” which I lifted from the U.S. 12″ promo.

I haven’t even hit download yet, but I’ve certainly hit ORGASM!! Man Paul, you pull out the best 12-inches, you incredibly “hung” DJ!!! No, seriously!! Your record collection is, …..HUGE!!! I love this song. It was so daring when it first came out, and still continues to titillate and inspire and make us all hot-under-the-collar, if not other places as well. A New Wave classic. What’s cool about the record is that it really doesn’t use any expletives. Just acceptable words. Makes me laugh though, it seems that the girl in the/a relationship can be of many things, but the guy is just the “Man”! Not in every case for sure, but only in this song!! Looking forward to hearing the instrumental as well. Thank you Paul, for this eroticized download!! Burning The Ground is bulging out with tumescence!!

    Aurally Stimulated!!!

Always got a laugh out of the orgasmic moaning and groaning in this mix. I used to spin this one a lot back in the day and it always filled the floor 🙂

Thanks Paul. This is my favorite single by Berlin.

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Omar I remember you asking for this some time ago 🙂

    Omar Reply:

Yes I did. Thanks once again.

  3. Jon Says:

Thanks…it’s nice to have the instrumental version in crystal clear sound. I wish they’d release the single remix of “Now It’s My Turn” on CD 🙁

Awesome post, Paul! Thank you! Berlin’s back catalog has been hugely neglected with so many 7″ and 12″ mixes that have never been made available on CD. I even wrote to Cherry Red Records (U.K. label which specializes in reissues) about reissuing the band’s back catalog with bonus tracks, but I never heard anything back. If you have any more Berlin, like “Now It’s My Turn [Edit/Remix]”, as Jon mentioned, or “Like Flames [Extended Version]”, please post. Thank you.

    DjPaulT Reply:

I’ll see what I can come up with 🙂

    Jon Reply:

The extended mix of Like Flames can be found of the Japan “Dancing in Berlin EP” CD but the single version has never made it to CD.

  4. David Gerard Says:

Back when it came out, this was played all the time on 6-UVS (one of the Perth university radio stations).

    DjPaulT Reply:

Very cool david. I don’t think I ever heard it on the radio in the US except for on college stations.

    The Doctor Reply:

It made it to #62 on the Billboard 100, and it was well-known enough for Weird Al Yankovic to include it in the “Polkas on 45” medley on his second album, so someone must have been playing it on the radio… 🙂

    Davos Via 45 Reply:

Yes that’s it! I didn’t recognise the song but knew all the lyrics! Of course, from the hilarious Weird Al Polka Medley! LOL

  5. Davos Via 45 Says:

Xcellent new-wave-synth-pop mixes! Sex reminds me of Giorgio Moroder productions and The Metro of Ultravox and early Kim Wilde stuff. Wiki has listed quite a few cover version of this song, all in all another interesting day @ BTG!

    DjPaulT Reply:

I agree with you Davos very Giorgio. They did go on to work with him on their next album 🙂

  6. Dean Says:

    Thank you!

    DjPaulT Reply:

    You’re welcome Dean 🙂

  7. PhotoHop Says:

    Thanks again!

    Thank you very much Paul.
