R.I.P. Denise Katrina Matthews (January 4, 1959 – February 15, 2016), better known as Vanity and sometimes credited as Denise Matthews-Smith or D.D. Winters, was a Canadian singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and model, who turned away from her acting and music career to concentrate on evangelism. Her career lasted from the early–1980s until the mid–1990s. She was the lead singer of the female trio Vanity 6 from 1981 until it disbanded in 1983. The group was well known for their 1982 R&B/funk hit “Nasty Girl”. Vanity’s music career also included two solo albums on the Motown Records label, Wild Animal and Skin on Skin. She also had a successful film career, starring in the movies The Last Dragon, 52 Pick-Up, and Action Jackson.

Due to her kidney problems which were caused by years of drug use while she worked as a performer, she had to undergo peritoneal dialysis five times a day (each session was 20 minutes long). She suffered from sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, a rare complication of a peritoneal dialysis, and died in a Fremont, California, hospital on February 15, 2016, at the age of 57 from renal failure.

Yes a sad passing. She was trying to raise cash for her treatment at the end.. without much luck (or help from any of her rich ex-boyfriends). May Denise rest in peace now. Many thanks for noticing and giving us this Paul.

And again Paul, you and your beauteous rips are paying the utmost tribute to the artists we have lost!! I do remember this song, because I saw it in the shops, but I can’t really remember it. It’s so nice that you’ve given us the 12-inch version and in such stellar quality. I know it’s going to be a terrific listen. Thanks for all your hard work. I think it’s great that you have the Hot Tracks’ mix of “Nasty Girl” on your site as well. So appreciative for your commitment to the highest of fidelities. Once again, your awesomeness can’t be overstated!! Just love you so much.

    Have an awesome weekend!!

    Hugs,

    Jeff

I only knew this track as a b-side to Nasty Girl. The mix was different, shorted, more european-poppy, maybe even a light Vince Clarke-feel. This extended sounds like Prince came around and brought the original mix. I should have bought this 12”..
Lovely voicework on this one. Naief, fits the style and artwork of bringing degrading enjoyment to the world of popmusic. Don’t know if I would encourage young top-40-girls to dress like that going out to the disco (or boys?), but for adolescents it was jokingly fun.
Yeah right Miley, Rhianna and Gaga-fans, it has all been done before, and classier, some girls even sang La vie en Rose doing it.

I know you are supposed to show respect for the dead but Vanity turned into a born again Christian. I remember her on TV bad mouthing Prince, her past music and condemning gay people, abortion and many other things.

Jon I don’t agree with her self righteous behavior after her pop stardom. I am celebrating the music 🙂
