Glenn Frey – You Belong To The City (US 12″ Promo)

Posted by DjPaulT on February 10th, 2016

Side 1

“You Belong to the City” is a song written by Glenn Frey and Jack Tempchin, and recorded by Frey during his solo career. It was written specifically for the television show Miami Vice in 1985. The song nearly reached the top of the charts, peaking at number two (behind Starship’s “We Built This City”) on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, although it did reach the top of the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart. This song, along with Jan Hammer’s “Miami Vice Theme”, helped the Miami Vice soundtrack album reach the top spot of the Billboard 200 chart for 11 weeks in 1985, making it the best-selling album of the year and the most successful TV soundtrack of all time.

All instruments were performed by Frey except the saxophone part played by studio musician Bill Bergman, as well as the drum track by Frey’s long-time drummer, Michael Huey. The song was recorded at Fool On The Hill studios, New York City, at the end of 1984. The synthesizer used in this song was a Yamaha DX7.

You’re welcome Gonzalo76. I meant to post this the other day but had to do some extra work on it 🙂

Oh how I love the atmosphere that this song creates. Anything with a saxophone really get me musically. Paul, thanks for ripping this Glenn Frey classic Classic!!! I never watched “Miami Vice” however, I always heard that they were very progressive in their incorporation of music and songs that fit the mood expertly. They certainly were an influential television show. And this track, especially the long version creates landscapes and images in my mind. I love tracks like this and started to think of Rod Stewart’s “Passion” too. Oh, and “Zalman King’s Red Shoe Diaries” and its evocative soundtrack. Ooh Paul, what you do to me and your other followers!! I love how you touch our lives with such beautiful music. Every day’s a holiday with you dear Paul. Thanks for this bliss I receive each and every day.

    In appreciation (ALWAYS!),

Very cool to see more Glenn Frey. Great song. I love that classic Yamaha synth sound. You could say that i’m a synth fanatic!

Nice tribute Paul. I always felt this was his best solo song, when I was a kid hearing this, I had no idea that he was in the Eagles. I didn’t watch Miami Vice, but the lonely, sad, sleazy vibe comes across really well, the reality sets in, the pastel clothes probably have stains, and those shoes probably don’t smell very well from a lack of socks. When I read Glen Frey died I listened to this song, it surprised me how the saxophone melody is a bit like the saxophone melody in Lazarus by David Bowie.

  7. JTF Says:

Haven’t heard this in a while… THanks Paul!

  8. CL Says:

    Thanks again.
