David Bowie – When The Wind Blows (Japan 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

A. Front

“When the Wind Blows” is a song from the soundtrack of the film of the same name, performed by David Bowie.

It marked the second contribution from Bowie to a film based on a Raymond Briggs book – he contributed a filmed introduction to The Snowman in 1982. Bowie’s song was the result of a collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Erdal Kizilcay, who would work with Bowie in the future, most notably on The Buddha of Suburbia.

The single peaked at UK No. 44, promoted by a video that featured a montage of clips from the film, with Bowie’s animated face overlaid. Since then, the song has become something of a rarity, appearing rarely on reissues and best-of compilations.

Unlike most instrumental B-sides from the 1980s, the instrumental version of “When the Wind Blows” is not simply a version of the song with vocals dubbed, but a completely different orchestral recording.

I remember my teens with your recent posts. 1986, the year of Bowie’s soundtracks. I bought the “Labyrinth” soundtrack with half of the songs by Bowie and the “Maxi 45 tours” as they were called in France of “Underground”, “Absolute Beginners” and the UK import of “When the wind blows”. I played the A-sides and the B-sides with the same delight.

Thanks for your posts of these gems.

Thanks for posting these tracks as this emotional time. As I commented on another post, Bowie dismissed most of his 80s output as his Phil Collins years – a pretty damning statement. I remember going to see him on the 1.Outside tour and seeing a guy and his wife walking out halfway through. It obviously wasn’t what they’d expected. The guy was wearing a Phil Collins t-shirt…

But while Bowie’s later 80s albums might not have been his best, he did release some great singles, many of them coming from soundtracks – Cat People (Putting Out Fire), This Is Not America, Absolute Beginners, When The Wind Blows and Underground. Disconet released remixes of the first two and while their version of Cat People added nothing to the original, their re-edit of This Is Not America worked pretty well, extending the track to some 7 minutes. If you have this it’d be great to get a quality rip – it would be so much better than my attempt!

Will you be posting any later remixes? There were some excellent, full-on dance mixes by the likes of Leftfield and Junior Vasquez in the 90s, and I know there were also mixes in the US that weren’t issued here in the UK. Thanks again.

You’re welcome Jonathan. I really only have 12″ material from the 80s with the exception of “Hallo Spaceboy” I think I have a promo of it but will have to check. I didn’t know about that disconet remix so that is one I will have to look for.

Andy you’ll just have to check back I usually don’t know what I am posting until the day I post it. I do have about another week or so of Bowie planned.

Thanks Paul, I’m really enjoying these 12″ singles of David Bowie from the 80’s, This Is Not America, Day-In Day-Out, Time Will Crawl, Never Let Me Down were also great tracks from this decade. Fame 90 was my favourite Bowie track from the start of the 1990’s.
You are doing a great job on these vinyls Paul.
