“Tonight” is a song written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop for Iggy’s second solo album, Lust for Life, released in 1977. The song was later made into the title track for Bowie’s own album Tonight.

Bowie re-recorded the song with guest vocalist Tina Turner in 1984 for his album of the same name. The song was recorded as a duet but the single was only credited to Bowie. The original spoken word introduction of the 1977 version, establishing that the lyric is addressed to a lover dying of a heroin overdose, was excised for Bowie’s version because Bowie regarded the introduction as an “idiosyncracy” of Iggy Pop that did not match his own personal vocabulary. Bowie also stated that he didn’t want to “inflict” that part of the song on Tina Turner, either.

The reggae-flavoured song reached only #53 in the UK singles charts (the first ‘current’ Bowie single to miss the top 40 since “Be My Wife” in 1976). In the US the song also peaked at the #53 position on the Billboard Hot 100.

Thank you very much, Paul. Really appreciating this wave of Bowie re-rips.
There is a brilliant remix of “Day-In, Day Out”, by Paul “Groucho” Smykle.
I love almost everything Shep Pettibone mixes, but Groucho’s mix really is better by comparison.
Hope it turns up in the near future!
Great work and great selection for BTG 2016 🙂

Didn’t have that particular mix but ordered it just as soon as I read your comment. Will post it whenever I get it in my hands 🙂

I’ve not heard that mix either, wow, I look forward to hearing that one.

    Brilliant news!

It’s not a very well known mix.
But, you’ll be very pleased when you hear it.
I used to own a copy, years ago – since ‘disappeared’.
Although, EMI released the Day-In, Day Out mixes digitally (iTunes etc.) almost a decade ago… To my knowledge, it has never appeared on CD.

    DjPaulT Reply:

They did issue them as digital files but only 256kbps.

Oh yes Paul, I’m loving the re-ups as well, along with the new Bowie records you have in your collection. It is so nice to have them in such stellar quality by such an extreme music fan as yourself. I still can’t believe that artists and labels aren’t knocking at your door to get their back catalog out there. Sometimes, as we all know, master tapes are misplaced or lost, but you are rescuing classics from oblivion. It makes me so proud of the work you do and I feel privileged to be able to express my feelings of gratitude to you. You’re the best. A real hero!!

Just another prove that chart positions are a relative thing. Tonight is a great song today as it was back then in 1984, when it got huge airplay around here, so I always considered it a big top ten hit and this are some fine mixes of this laid back track.
The right medicine for my soar ears as most of the music producers today seem to be on steroids 24 hours a day!

Thanks so much for all the Bowie. It’s very much appreciated. Bowie’s an artist who deserves to be remembered and listened to.
