BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

A. Front

“This Is Not America” is a song by jazz fusion band Pat Metheny Group and rock singer David Bowie, taken from the soundtrack for the film The Falcon and the Snowman.

The song, a midtempo ballad, was released as a single which reached No. 14 in the UK, and No. 32 in the US. The song later appeared on Bowie’s greatest hits compilation Best of Bowie, appearing on all but the Australian and Japanese pressings of that album. Metheny later noted that Bowie’s words were “profound and meaningful – and absolutely perfect for the film.”

Thank you so much for all these great David Bowie (and all the other gems you so kindly and lovingly share with us)

Highlight of my day is seeing an update on facebook with your new upload.

I wish they had made an extended mix for this – looked on discogs but all the versions are 3.51 ish.

Some great lengthier versions on you tube which I’ve managed to rip 🙂

    Thanks again gorgeous xxx

There was an edit of this song on Disconet Volume 7, Program 9, but it’s just a shuttle between the instrumental and the vocal. These days, it’s probbaly easier to create an extended edit on your computer than it was for DJs when this song was released.

There was also an official remix on a 2003 CD called Club Bowie, but oddly it sounds more out of date today than the original does.

Yes, never understood why there has been no extended track!

(But perhaps it was the “perfect track” as it was?)

You wouldn’t happen to have “Real Cool World”, from the Cool World soundtrack, in the pile of Bowie 12″ gems, would you? 🙂

(looks like there’s actually two 12″ versions of this)

    DjPaulT Reply:

I don’t have that one on vinyl Doctor.

    Hi Paul,

I don’t comment very often but I want to tell you how much I (like everyone else on here) appreciate this tribute to Bowie. Your work blows all the CD versions out of the water. This Is Not America has always been a yawner for me, and I skip it on greatest hits albums; but I think the sound on yours will open my ears up to new sounds I never noticed on CDs.

Thank you so much for this rip. As I already told you, this was my favourite from David Bowie. Unfortunately this song has not been remixed or extended. However, we have the instrumental version here. I think this has never been released on CD yet. Thanks again for this wonderful tribute to Mr. Bowie. It is at the height of what he deserves.

It’s such a pretty and haunting piece. I like the instrumental just as much. Thank you for this terrific introduction.

I am assuming you are doing ok after the storm Jeff I was worried about you and all my readers from the hard hit area. If you can check out the movie this is from “The Falcon And The Snowman” starring Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn.

    Jeff Reply:

Thank you Paul for the well-wishes. Yeah, the storm was pretty intense. Thankfully, we didn’t lose power. I’m quite sore from shoveling all the snow though. It’s so great to have you in my life. All the very best Paul!

    Hello Paul,

You are putting on some great gems from David Bowie, once again the quality from your vinyl is amazing, it’s great to listen to these tracks, Bowie 80’s era I really enjoyed, as well as other era’s of his music.
Ashes To Ashes came out in 1980, it’s a pity that there wasn’t a proper 12″ of this amazing track, a 12″ did come out in Germany called the Disco Mix, but all it was the album version and the B-Side was the Alabama Song.

  14. Davos Via 45 Says:

Still an amazing and stunning song, so moody, nice collaboration, both versions got huge airplay on the radio, shame there’s no proper extended or extended dance mix.
Great sounding rip! So just a usual day on BTG! LOL

  15. Dirk Says:

Thank you. Along with a full over the top extended length original version I hope there exists to be released of an other fav of mine – Sound And Vision, this b-side instrumental I have been hoping for aswell. You made my day again, Paul, Thank You.

  16. Teo Says:

Thanks Paul for this David Bowie marathon… great stuff!!
Have you thought about doing a Glenn Frey tribute afterwards?
He only had 2-3 solo hits..
