“You Know How to Love Me” is a song by Reggie Lucas and James Mtume, most notably recorded by Phyllis Hyman and released on Hyman’s LP You Know How To Love Me, released in 1979. The single released towards the end of the disco era, was one of Phyllis Hyman’s most successful releases. “You Know How to Love Me” peaked at number six on the disco chart, becoming her biggest hit on that chart. While the single did not place on the Hot 100, it peaked at number twelve on the Hot Soul Singles chart.

On the afternoon of June 30, 1995, Hyman committed suicide by overdosing on pentobarbital and secobarbital in her New York City apartment. She was found unconscious hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater and died 3 hours later at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. Her suicide note read in part:

“I’m tired. I’m tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you.”

She was 45 years old. A memorial service was held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Manhattan. The following week would have been her 46th birthday.

Oh, I will look forward to hearing this one once it is up. I really enjoyed her work with Norman Connors as well as Pharaoh Sanders. This is definitely her prime era. It was such a shame she killed herself. So often people don’t comprehend the reach of their soul and the significance they have to the people around them. One should never discount oneself or allow despair to take hold. Life is short enough as it is.

    It’s working now Joey. Enjoy!

I remember this song well Paul. I’ve always loved it and I really am sad about her death. Such a tragedy. It’s another one of your “lost classics” on your site that I can cross off my list.

Thanks again for this past week, especially the Book Of Love singles. Songs are such an emotional touchstone in our lives and you Paul fill me up with such joy and pleasure. I don’t know how you do it, not only the artful ripping process, but the record choice for the day and the weeks. Plus, you get all sorts of requests and I know you try your hardest to get to a piece of music that resonates within us all. It’s a labor of love and for that I am eternally grateful for your aural endeavors.

Have a wonderful weekend. You so deserve so much Paul. Your generosity is well respected, appreciated and loved.
