Book Of Love – Boy (US 12″)

“Boy” is the title of the 1985 debut single by the American synthpop band Book of Love. The song was included on the band’s eponymous debut album Book of Love in 1986.

Although the song failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it did make the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it peaked at no. 7 in April 1985.

“Boy” was written by band member Theodore (“Ted”) Ottaviano and features a prominent tubular bells melody. The band secured a recording contract when the demo of the song was given to DJ/producer Ivan Ivan, who then passed it along to Seymour Stein of Sire Records.

The song is also notable for its uncommon (in a mainstream pop song of its time) subject matter, describing the frustrations of a woman who likes “a boy who likes boys”. The lyrical content, however, is veiled and suggestive rather than overt and explicit, presumably due to the unease surrounding homosexuality in some circles of US culture in the mid-1980s.

In 1985, a rare Australian promotional video was shot for the single. On May 21, 1985, the song was featured on American Bandstand’s rate-a-record segment. Up against B.E. Taylor Group’s “Reggae Rock & Roll”, “Boy” won the competition with the score of 84.

Thanks Paul once again. Any change for some cool British new wave stuff?

I feel like a volcano Paul, but instead of producing lava, I’m producing massive amounts of goose bumps!!! Wow, a second dose of Book Of Love!! And there’s the dub I have always wanted. I feel like a bottle of Champagne, uncorked and ready to spew my bubbles all over the place!! I so love this band and I can not thank you enough for bringing them out and introducing them to a whole new listening audience. Book Of Love have always been ambisexual (is this a word?) and I love them for it. Their imagery has been always sensual, if not sexual, and they were so groundbreaking in the 1980’s. I am all smiles, gooseflesh and effervescent!!

    Much Gratitude!! (As ALWAYS!!!)

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Jeff. I hope that my readers outside the US will embrace this slice of synth-op heaven. By far my favorite Book Of Love song 🙂

    Jeff Reply:

I hope so too Paul. This band truly needs to be (re)discovered!!

Excellent post, Paul! “Boy” is my favorite Book of Love song, too. Thank you for the “Dub Version”, which I hadn’t heard previously! So awesome!

  7. mothloop Says:

I’ve always thought it remarkable that the two Ottavianos of this group are not related. If theirs is a common surname, I’ve yet to meet anyone who also has it. Thanks for more from this great group!

  8. Martin L. Gore Says:

I I have just about everything by this awesome band but just wanted to say KUDOS for uploading such a gem of a synthpop masterpiece!

  9. Junior Says:

I adore the last single you posted by Book Of Love, so i’m sure i will love this single too.

    Thanks Paul 🙂
