39 Lyon Street, The Associates – Kites (UK 12″)

A. Front

“Kites” was a one off single released on May 11, 1981 (Credited to 39 Lyon Street). Taking advantage of a clause in their contract that allowed them to record for other labels as long as Billy Mackenzie did not sing lead, they produced a version of Simon Dupree and the Big Sound’s 1967 hit, with vocals from Billy’s old friend Christine Beveridge. (Beveridge and another old partner in crime Steve Reid, performed together as Orbidoig. Billy took to announcing that Christine was one of his favourite singers, much to her embarrassment.) 39 Lyon Street was the address of Christine’s Dundee flat.

An edited version of “Kites” appears on The Associates compilation “Singles” as far as I know the full length 12″ version has not appeared on CD.

Thanks once again Paul. Btw is the new logo a combination of Wild Boys/View to a kill artwork?

    DjPaulT Reply:

actually it was inspired by a view to a kill.

  2. Jeff Says:

Hey Paul!! Love the new banner on the page. I love how you change-it-up occasionally. Again, such a surprise for this single. I guess it’s different from the one on the flip-side of “Breakfast”? I’m so enjoying this extended discography of The Associates. It’s been new music for me these last two weeks or so and I can’t help but say to you, many, many thanks. You’re wonderful!!

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you Jeff I was just just messing around with photoshop over the weekend and decided I wanted something new glad you like the banner. Yes the version on the “Breakfast” single is different 🙂

  3. EW Says:

OK – this is totally unexpected. Fabulous choice Paul. Thanks.

    DjPaulT Reply:

    You’re welcome EW 🙂

  4. VanceMan Says:

I used to have the 7″ of this back when it was originally issued, but I had no idea there was an extended version! Thanks, as always, for such amazing finds.

    DjPaulT Reply:

    You’re welcome VanceMan 🙂

  5. David Gerard Says:

Do you have any of the other related oddities, e.g. “Ice Cream Factory”, Orbidoig?

    DjPaulT Reply:

David I have “Ice Cream Factory” planned for an upcoming post 🙂

  6. Joey Says:

Wow, this is turning out to be another epic series like the Wham! one last year. I’ve not heard this one before. Thanks again!!!

  7. Junior Says:

Love the new banner, Paul. Great colour combo.

Thanks for another Associates gem too 🙂

  8. Paddy Says:

This is a true treat. Have not heard this one before.

  9. wolfie Says:

Fab rarity! Thank you paul x

  10. ex15 Says:

As an avid fan of the original, by Simon Dupree, this doesn’t work for me. An interesting take non the less.

Thanks for the rip, Paul 🙂

  11. Jermajesty Says:

So is that B. Mackenzie on backing vocals?
An odd one, but a great addition.

Does this 9th Associates post in a row now beat the Wham marathon?
Funnily enough, both groups were releasing stuff during an almost identical timeframe, give or take a year. Odd to think about.

    DjPaulT Reply:

The b-side is Billy Mackenzie on lead Jermajesty. If it hasn’t beat the Wham! record it’s getting close and I still have more Associates left to post 🙂
