I love this track! That hypnotic beat, and that full production. Very pleasant. One of my favorite tracks of the 80’s (although Foreigner’s ‘That Was Yesterday’ is still my number one).

Scritti Politti is always welcome. Thanks for this post Paul. Just great!

Continuing the love for Scritti Politti and for this blog! The recent runs of Tracey Ullman and Karen Finley were great. Don’t suppose you have any more Swing Out Sister gems….?

PS any chance for a reupp of Stir It Up by Patti Labelle? I guess you still have the files somewhere?

The incredible thing about this track is how fresh it still sounds. It’s one of those timeless tracks which could pass as a new release even today, thirty years later. A bright production, mixing lots of high frequency detail with deeper ambient reverbs and Green’s sweet vocals, its energy and dynamic range always felt like a workout for my hi-fi speakers. It was one of the first charting hits to incorporate sequencers. Due to Arif Mardin’s production abilities this and Word Girl from Cupid & Psyche ’85 are still regarded by UK vinyl audiophile magazines as being in the top 20 of recommended 12 inch platters from the 1980s. The Scritti/Mardin collaboration later led to Green writing a song for Chaka Khan, and providing backing vocals (on the single, Love Of A Lifetime.)

Beautifully put Steve! And Paul’s rip is class all the way! “Cabaret Time” for sure!
