Rough Trade – Shakedown (Netherlands 7″)

Posted by DjPaulT on June 5th, 2015

A. Front

“Shakedown” is a song by Canadian new wave rock band Rough Trade centered on singer Carole Pope and multi-instrumentalist Kevan Staples. The band was noted for their provocative lyrics and stage antics; singer Pope often performed in bondage attire, and their 1981 hit “High School Confidential” was one of the first explicitly lesbian-themed Top 40 hits in the world..”Shakedown” was recorded exclusively for inclusion on the soundtrack for the 1980 psychological thriller Cruising directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino. The single was only released in the Netherlands by Lorimar Records.

The b-side “When I Close My Eyes I See Blodd” recorded by Madelynn von Ritz is another track from the film’s soundtrack.

Since it’s release the highly controversial film along with it’s soundtrack have become cult classics.

I went to see Cruising with my parents when it was released way back when. Quite an evening for all three of us!

It isn’t until just now that I realized it actually had a soundtrack. Thank you so much for sharing. I was always a fan of Rough Trade and I appreciate this track very much.

I grew up only 20 minutes from the Peace Bridge to Canada. I was lucky enough to grow up listening to the mighty CFNY FM, Toronto. Rough Trade were local legends, and High School Confidential is still one of my all time favorites. Carole Pope sounds so gritty in it.. I remember the girls in school really did wear Tigress by Faberge! I don’t know if I know this track, but I’m looking forward to listening.
