“Obsession” is a 1983 song covered in 1984 by the group Animotion. The song hit number six in the United States, and number five in the United Kingdom in early 1985, helped by a distinctive video that received heavy rotation on MTV.

“Obsession” was originally written and recorded as a duet by songwriter Holly Knight and musician Michael Des Barres in 1983. This version was played in the 1983 film A Night in Heaven, during a scene in which Christopher Atkins bumps and grinds in Lesley Ann Warren’s face in sync with the rhythm of the song. The song was featured on the film’s soundtrack, but did not receive enough attention to warrant much radio play or a place on any Billboard charts. That version was also featured in the theatrical trailer to the 1986 film 9½ Weeks, starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger.

The Los Angeles-based synth-pop band Animotion recorded a version of the tune for their self-titled debut album, released in 1984. This version became a massive success, and it remains Animotion’s biggest hit.

Paul, thank you for this record. Again, when I first discovered your site, this was a track I was “obsessed” with, especially the dub version, which I haven’t heard in years. I’m glad you have the original version posted here on your site too. That version by Michael Des Barnes & Holly Knight I really enjoy. Paul, you absolutely amaze and delight me with your tastes.

    Have a great weekend DjPaulT!!!

    Hi Neil,

“Obsession” by Michael Des Barres & Holly Knight. It’s right here on Paul’s site. The Animotion song is a remake of this one.

    Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks, awesome. Never cottoned on to the fact that it was a cover! I also did a site search for the first time using ‘Obsession’ and it only returned today’s post.

It comes up in search if you type Michael Des Barres. Not sure why the title doesn’t appear.

I have only the MP3 of this in my files so i’m very glad to finally get the FLAC + a 2015 re-rip. Quick query though, the original posted is stated as USA 12″ on my hard drive so i’m guessing that this is actually a different record entirely. I note that contents (tracks/mixes/durations) are exactly the same though.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Yes originally i posted the US 12″ which did not come in a picture sleeve. I am a picture sleeve fanatic so I later bought the German 12″ just for the sleeve it’s sounds better too 🙂

    Jeff Reply:

This is the details which set you apart from all the other places Paul! I love these picture sleeves. Like, just the other day when you posted the Miami Sound Machine 12-inch of “(Uh-Oh) Falling In Love.” I remember seeing that dance record in the shops with only a generic black sleeve. You really give us fans that extra special “edge” with little details like this by posting gorgeous sleeves. You’re the best!

    DjPaulT Reply:

I used to always and still do spend a little extra money just for the sleeve. That’s one of the things that makes vinyl so great.

A Synth-pop classic, it sounds so…80s! LOL. One of my favourite synth driven songs, excellent mixes, strongly reminds me on some Human League stuff, also Trevor Horns ZTT productions, especially Propaganda, probably some of the most epic 12″ mixes ever made!

  15. Steve Sharp Says:

The VOCAL version of the Mark Berry mix (which uses a lot of the same sounds as on his mix of “Sex-O-Matic” by the Bar-Kays can be found on the B-side of the U.S. 12″ for “I Engineer”. This 12″ (and the U.S. one) only have Mark Berry’s dub mix.
