A. Front

“Love Tumbles Down” is the debut single by Manchester band Zu Zu Sharks, composed of vocalist/songwriter Richard Darbyshire, Adam and the Ants bassist Gary Tibbs and Alistair Gordon on keyboards. “Love Tumbles Down” was a number 1 hit in Spain, but Darbyshire left the band in 1983, unhappy with their pop sound. Darbyshire would go on to form the band Living In A Box in 1987.

Thanks Paul. Love Richard Darbyshire’s voice. Loved Living In A Box. Although hearing his early stuff is a real joy!

Thank you Omar I really love this single. Great feel about it 🙂

Wow… did this even get any kind of release or airplay in the US at all? Because I sure don’t remember ever hearing of these guys before…

(Hm. According to Discogs.com, these guys only had two singles; this one, and “Eyes of the World.” I don’t suppose you have “Eyes” coming up next in the queue, do you? 🙂 )

    DjPaulT Reply:

As far as I can tell it was only a hit in Spain #1 actually. Yes I will be releasing their other single tomorrow 🙂

    Yay 🙂

In the meantime — since I couldn’t find the lyrics anywhere online (the internets, they have failed me!), I took a stab at transcribing it, as a service to the BTG community. 🙂

    —————-
    Pressure’s on, turn me on
Turn me over to the other side

    The enemy territory
The guarantee that love has died

The cold war of the words
    The fighting between the lines
    I got nothing to say

    I’m waiting for the day
    When we can fall together
Lose them all, and we’ll live forever
    We’ll live forever

    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
    I was bound to fall
    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
I was bound to love you
    As love tumbles down…

    Fallin’ in, fallin’ out
Fall in love and leave a broken heart

    Only the dream survived
To surrender when they tore us apart

So it’s back to the world
It’s back to the wall (Nothin’ at all)
    And nothing to say

    I’m waiting for the day
    When we can fall together
Lose them all, and we’ll live forever
    We’ll live forever

    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
    I was bound to fall
    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
I was bound to love you
    As love tumbles down…

    Love…
    As love tumbles…

    I’m waiting for the day
    When we can fall together
Lose them all, and we’ll live forever
    We’ll live forever

    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
    I was bound to fall
    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
I was bound to love you
    As love tumbles down…

    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
    Just to touch…
    As love tumbles down
    To the ground
    Just to touch…
    (~repeat and fadeout~)

(* I know these two lines read oddly, but I’ve listened to them a dozen times, and haven’t come up with any alternatives that don’t make even less sense, so…)

Hey Doc, thanks so much for taking the time to transcribe the lyrics!

As for the 3rd line, I’ve always heard “The enemy territory”, but then again English’s not my mother tongue, so take it with a pinch of salt…

    [Reply]

    The Doctor Reply:

Hm… Actually, yours might be the right one. “Territory” didn’t occur to me because that’s four syllables, while the line as sung is clearly only three syllables — but after listening to it again with that suggestion in mind, it could well be “territ’ry”, i.e. “territory” sung with the last two syllables squeezed together into “—tree” instead of “–tor-ee”. And “enemy territory” would make more sense…

…yeah, let’s go with that one instead. 🙂 Too bad there’s no way to go back and edit an existing post…

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hey Doc email me the lyrics and I will edit the post for you.

Thank you Paul for such a feel good, wait, scratch that, FEEL GREAT!! SONG!! Whoa, this really released my serotonin levels! You can pick such excellent songs to elevate one’s mood and mind set! This was new to me, but I can’t understand why this didn’t get any airplay. This song is such an amazing ditty. The Winter’s cold and horrid, but this speaks of Spring and Summer! Terrific choice Paul to get rid of the doldrums! You rock!!

    Jeff

I feel so sorry for you guys in the North East Jeff storm after storm a relentless winter indeed. This is one of my favorite records. It does bring warmth and feelings of Spring. Enjoy Jeff 🙂

  4. josmon10 Says:

Wow, I never expected to find this favourite of mine here! Especially as rare as it is outside Spain, where it really was a big hit, but I’ve always wondered why it flopped everywhere else. A few years later I became a fan of Living In A Box, and it took me some time to realize it featured the same vocalist, the great Richard Darbyshire. Memories…

“Eyes of the world” is also pretty good, do you have it too?

    Keep it up, Paul!!

    [Reply]

    DjPaulT Reply:

I agree Josmon10 a very over looked track which should have been a massive hit worldwide. I will be releasing “Eyes Of The World” tomorrow 🙂

  5. Jermajesty Says:

Jesus H what the hell is this!! I’ve seriously , once again, never heard of it! But Gary Tibbs!!! I must check it out.

Do you know the film Breaking Glass BTW Paul – Gary Tibbs has a pretty major role in it (as a bassist :D)

    [Reply]

    DjPaulT Reply:

I have heard of the movie Jermajesty but never seen it. Gary Tibbs was the bassist for Adam And The Ants and Corey Hart.

    [Reply]

    Jermajesty Reply:

And he did a stint in Roxy Music just prior to the Ants, I found out last year.

I think maybe this Zu Zu Sharks track didn’t hit because it was just a year or two too early. It sounds very much like something from 1985.

OMG Paul, you really should check out Breaking Glass – filmed in grim 80s London, about a struggling new-wave band and the pressures of success.

Jeremy Healy (Haysi Fantayzee) and Philip Saloon (Boy George’s mate) are in it briefly as extras. Boy George has said he was in a crowd scene at a gig, but I’ve watched it 100 times and never been able to find him.

    Here’s the trailer:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3onzhHCWG8
Mr Tibbs is barely in the trailer, but he does have a large part in the actual movie.

Look on YouTube and the full movie is there. I really think you’ll love it, if only for the great soundtrack. If you can’t find it I’ll send you a copy!

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you for the link. I just found the movie on blu-ray gonna order it tomorrow 🙂

    [Reply]

    Jermajesty Reply:

No NOOOO! The blu-ray release is the US version and is very heavily cut, even with a completely different ending!
Hope I’m not too late with my warning.
You need the UK version, which has only been out on DVD. (and YouTube 😉 )

    cdmaniac Reply:

Thanks for the heads up. Its been on my wishlist since it came out. Hopefully an uncut bluray is released soon. I havent seen this in so many years Im not sure which version I saw.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Nope not too late havn’t ordered it yet. Thanks for the heads up 🙂

    The Doctor Reply:

It also might not have “hit”, at least here in the States, because it was only a single, without a full album behind it. Record companies and radio stations here in the US tended not to give a lot of attention to non-album singles (other than novelty records such as “Disco Duck”), especially from obscure or unknown artists without an existing track record of hits. If they’d held together long enough to release a full album, they might’ve gotten some more promotion on this side of the pond.
