BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

A. Front

“Tied Up” was one of two new songs recorded for the 1982 (Double Platinum) greatest hits package titled “Olivia’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2” the song was the second single released from the album following “Heart Attack” (US #3) the other new track recorded for the package. “Tied Up” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 on January 15, 1983 peaking at #38. The song also features American saxophonist, composer, arranger, conductor and bandleader of the west coast jazz/jazz fusion ensemble the L.A. Express Tom Scott on horns. Scott was also the opening act for Olivia’s 1982 “Physical” World Tour and appears in the songs music video.

The b-side features an album track from Olivia’s 1981 LP Physical. “Silvery Rain”, which was written by The Shadows member Hank Marvin and released as single in 1971 by British singer Cliff Richard has lyrics denouncing the aerial application use for pesticides to exterminate insects. A music video directed by Brian Grant was filmed for the song and included on the Grammy winning video album “Olivia Physical”.

As with many of Olivia’s 7″ singles the edited version of “Tied Up” has never appeared on CD or any compilation.

Thank you Jeff. It’s so sad that many of ONJ’s eighties single mixes have been neglected.I have many ONJ fans on this site that are waiting to hear these rare mixes.

I echo Jeff’s sentiments 100%, Paul. It can’t be stressed enough how valuable what you do is for us collectors. I had no idea there were as many Olivia single mixes as there apparently are. Basically, the versions that are on the “Gold” and “Greatest Hits” CD’s are the versions I’ve been hearing all my life. (I assume they’re all the album versions?). I didn’t know any were edited and/or remixed. What are some other songs of hers that had separate single mixes? I heard that “Livin’ In Desperate Times” had a single version that was somewhat different than the album version, but I didn’t know of any others.

The Rumour 12″ has 4 mixes including 2 mixes by Shep Pettibone.

Dan yes “Livin’ In Desperate Times” has a single remix. Also the original album version that appeared on the “Two Of A Kind” soundtrack vinyl and cassette is different than what MCA released on the 1998 CD of the soundtrack. Apparently the original master was damaged so they created a really hacked up edit for the CD. Other single mixes are “Soul Kiss”, “Landslide”, “The Rumour”.

Totally Hot was also remixed for the US single release with a new instrumental bridge. It seems in the UK we mostly got just the regular album tracks as singles while they were remixed/edited for the US market. That was certainly the case with Totally Hot, Landslide and Tied Up.

Wow! I never knew there is a single version. Always assumed the one on GH Vol 2 is the one and only version. That’s why your blog is priceless…not just for those pristine rips, but also the rarities you spring upon us!
    Thank you sir!!!
BTW, Lee Ritenour did a version in 1982. I wonder whose was released first…any idea, Paul?

    DjPaulT Reply:

Not sure who recorded it first Ric. Stevie Nicks also recorded a demo of the song but never released it. I think it fits ONJ perfectly 🙂
