Company B – The Miami Megamix (German 12″)

Company B is a Latin freestyle trio formed in 1986 by Cuban-American producer Ish “Angel” Ledesma (Foxy, Oxo), featuring members Lori L. (Ledesma), Charlotte McKinnon and Susan (Gonzalez) Johnson. Before the group’s self-titled Album was released, Charlotte McKinnon left and was replaced by Lezlee Livrano. After the group’s self-titled debut album, Susan Johnson left and was replaced by Sheena. For the group’s second album, 1989’s Gotta Dance, Sheena and Lezlee Livrano both left the group and were replaced by Donna Huntley and Julie Marie (who also was a rotating performer with Exposé).

Company B resulted from the music trend of producer-driven girl groups in the late 1980s and early 1990s, most successfully the group Exposé. Company B’s first single “Fascinated” was released in 1986 on the independent label The Summer. The song created so much buzz in clubs around Miami that it soon made its way to local radio stations. This in turn led to its being picked up and re-released by Atlantic records. With a much wider distribution due to major label [Atlantic] backing, “Fascinated” received significant radio and club airplay in all major cities throughout the U.S. It reached number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart and crossed over to pop radio, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1988 dance label ZYX Records issued a “The Miami Megamix” which was a megamix of Company B’s dance hits. The megamix was created by remixer producer Peter Vriends and only released in Germany.

You always bring something to surprise us. I had no idea of the existence of this megamix. Thanks DjPaulT for sharing all these rare releases. And for all the time invested on it.

Have worked at an agency below Essential Dnce Music, the record company of Peter Vriends. Nice guy. Did some CD covers for him.

Terrific way to bring in the weekend Paul. Megamixes are my thing and you have done such a stellar and excellent job resurrecting a lot of the classics. I can’t thank you enough for all of them located here on Burning The Ground. I’m particularly interested in hearing this one. I am a huge fan of Ish the producer. He was responsible for the old disco group Foxy with those phenomenal disco classics “Get Off” and “Hot Number.” I also loved his OXO and the song “Whirly Girl.” He also had a wonderful (but forgotten) LP from the 80’s produced by my favorite musician/producer John Robie called “On This Corner.” It was during these sessions with Mr. Robie that Ish learned a lot about sequencing and such and that helped Ish with coming up with that great cowbell line on “Fascinated.” I think this is going to be fabulous. Again and I can’t help but saying this to you Paul each and every time, thank you for all the time you invest with these vinyl “rescues” that we all love so well. It’s been such an EAR-GASMIC week here on BTG!!! I’ve heard some great cuts with phenomenal fidelity and I have to give thanks to, our “Angel of Audio” DjPaulT. You’re the best, as always.

    Have a marvelous weekend!!!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

I didn’t have this one, could it be it was never issued on cd? Can’t wait to hear this since I read the name Peter Vriends – check out the Blanco Y Negro label with series I Love Mixes, he is there with some awesome titles!

    DjPaulT Reply:

Martijin it was only released in Germany. I will check out the Blanco label. Thanks 🙂

I see now ZYX has released it on cd.

Good stuff! Thanks very much for this. You’re the best. Would love it if you could post more of their singles in the future (esp. Perfect Lover). Fascinated is still one of the songs I remember most from my clubbing days, but all of the singles off their first album got heavy rotation here. New remixes of these songs keep getting released every few years, but nothing stacks up to the originals.

    Thanks Paul for this post.
Fascinated is my favourite freestyle single of all time. That freestyle fever is unmatched!
    And this megamix is awesome!
So sad that they couldn’t followup with greater success.
Didn’t know ish is involved with OXO and the quirky Whirly Girl!
But I love his other project with Blue Moderne…No Use To Borrow is another freestyle minor hit that I love. (One Two Cha Cha Cha!)

  9. woz Says:

I love this miami dance sound and look forward to hearing this megamix. Thanks!

  10. matt Says:

    Great track – thanks 🙂

  11. Ramone Says:

ahhh such awesome memories ..1986 ..San Jose, California ..I swear the clubs played ‘Fascinated’ (extended version) EVERY hour ON the hour and you couldnt even move on the dance floor. PURE BLISS with a smooth, strong lead vocal and some GR8 instrumentation. Company B is def a mainstay in my ipod. MANY THANKS FOR THIS ONE PAUL !! HAPPY NEW YEAR !!
