Erasure – Blue Savannah (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

Side One

“Blue Savannah” is a song by Erasure which was issued as a single from the duo’s fourth studio album Wild! in 1990. Mute Records released it in Europe as the album’s third single, and Sire Records released it in the United States as the album’s second single.

It is a classic Erasure synthpop song written by members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell. One of the band’s signature songs, the duo still perform it regularly in concert. An uplifting love song, the instrumentation is crisp and heavily synthesized, accented with sweeping, programmed piano.

“Blue Savannah” became one of Erasure’s most successful singles, peaking at number three on the UK singles chart. It also returned the band to the Top 20 in Germany, where the song hit number thirteen. The release of the single brought about the usual array of remixes and B-sides. Although several club mixes of “Blue Savannah” were issued commercially, the US promo only Shep Pettibone “Out of the Blue” mix proved to be most popular in dance clubs.

In the US “Blue Savannah” peaked at #44 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play Chart.

Same here. I have the CD single promo of this release.
I never understand why they released it only as a promo 12″/CD.

I think I said it in another post (mentioning this very release) that these commissions are contracted under different terms than a standard commercial release, and if a label wants to commercially release the work subsequently, they need to renegotiate that with the artists doing the remix work.

That may all be bunk, but I had heard it for several years, and when I met the illustrious Justin Strauss, he confirmed that does happen.

However, the main mix off this WAS subsequently released commercially on a “Retroactive” rare remix collection (which, yours truly, had a small uncredited part in curating). If I recall, the rights were all secured through Warner Special Markets (IIRC) without any remixer consent. That would send the whole theory to hell, of course, but I do know that Mute was not party to the commission at all, and that they definitely would have to negotiate with Pettibone, Strauss, and any other US-label commissioned work for their own UK label release. Hence, no EBX set releases of any of those US 12″ mixes, at least.

    My 0.02 ¢. 🙂

I know I’m joining this discussion late but can I ask is the Remix/Edit on this release the same track that appeared on the US Cassette Single? And was that the same track that appeared on the US 7” Promo? Anyone know?
Thanks again Paul for your brilliant posts.
