 BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

A. Front

“Pieces of Ice” is a song written by Marc Jordan and John Capek and recorded by Diana Ross on the RCA label. It was released as a single in 1983.

The first release off the singer’s self-titled Ross album, it was the only simultaneous top forty single the singer scored on this album, which was one of her rare misses on the RCA label in the early-1980s.

The song reached number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (#15 R&B) and #46 in the UK. It charted best in Norway, where it reached #8.

Thanks for posting, very happy to see this one here. Great underrated single. Can’t believe she didn’t even include it on any of her compilations until Sony BMG released her Playlist CD last year.

Awesome! Thank you! To piggyback on Joey’s comment, I can’t believe this wasn’t included on the Central Park DVD – she sang it at the show!

I’ve seen her basically every year since she started touring again in 2004. I believe the only “RCA” songs she did were “Why Do Fools” (which I wish she’d ditch!), “Mirror, Mirror” (only a few times) and “Missing You” (also only a few times around MJ’s passing). I’d love to see more! Have fun!!!

As you know I don’t normally partake in Disco Friday, but I must poke my nose into anything Ross – thanks. 🙂 x

EDIT – just realised it’s not Friday today. Easter confusion. Thanks all the same!

You all set for Record Store Day on Saturday?

Wow! Really… yes, should be cool!

Think my fave Di Ross track is Upside Down, distinctly remember going in to town to buy that 7″ with my pocket money. 😀 Also love My Old Piano.

Duran Duran actually stated in a video released yesterday for the 30th anniversary of “The Reflex” that “Upside Down” and the album “Diana” were inspiration for the song.

Her RCA 12 inches (EMI in Europe) are rare and for most of them totally unavailable on CD. Really strange. Motown does the job with much more dedication. So kudos for you to post this Gary Katz produced 1983 single. Hope you have more 12 inches from her RCA era.

Ooooh! I love this post. Been after a lossless of the extended for ages!!!
The weird thing is…but in 1983, when Diana released Pieces Of Ice, it was the first Diana single in the 80s that didn’t do anything for me. I had loved her 80s output up till that point. So I was much bothered that it only scrapped the Top 40.
    BUT!
This is one of the few singles that grew on me as time passes.
And I’m actually very fond of it now. Not as immediate as many of her signature tunes, but it’s precisely the understated nature that I can appreciate much more with…sigh…age. LOL!
Thanks Paul for this piece of vinyl rip…cool as ice you are but giving us hot burning vinyls!

two typo errors…”back in 1983″ and “So I wasn’t much bothered”.

  11. Jeff Says:

Gosh, it’s been ages since I’ve heard this one and I am jazzed to hear the 12-inch version. To me, “Swept Away” was my ultimate Diana Ross song, maybe because of Arthur Baker’s mix and the crazy Latin Rascal edits on them. Ross said that Arthur Baker must have been on Pluto when she heard the dub mix!

Hope you enjoy the Diana show Paul and happy Record Store Day too. Would love to get the new “Ghostbusters” remixes. Thanks for the original rip on that one too Paul. You are……AGAIN!!!!….. Beyond Great!!

    Jeff
