The Waitresses – Christmas Wrapping (UK 12″)

A. Front

“Christmas Wrapping” is a Christmas song by the American post-punk band The Waitresses. It was first released on the compilation album A Christmas Record (1981) on ZE Records, and also appears on the Waitresses’ 1982 EP I Could Rule the World if I Could only Get the Parts (1982). The song received positive reviews from music critics, and Allmusic described it as “one of the best holiday pop tunes ever recorded.”

The song was released as a single in the UK in 1981 on Island Records. Although it did not make the charts that year, it was reissued in 1982 and reached No. 45 on the official UK Singles Chart in December 1982.

In 1981 ZE Records asked each of its artists to record a Christmas song for a Christmas compilation album, A Christmas Record. Songwriter Chris Butler wrote the song in August that year, assembling it from assorted unused riffs he had saved “for a rainy day”. Some of the lyrics were finished in a taxi cab on the way to the recording studio. Butler explained the lyrics came from “just very much that for years I hated Christmas … Everybody I knew in New York was running around like a bunch of fiends. It wasn’t about joy. It was something to cope with.”

Written soon after the birth of rap music, the song is “almost rapped” by Patty Donahue; the title is a pun on “rapping”.

I remember this christmas track from my senior year of high school. Patty Donahue had a great voice/attitude. Thanks Paul!

    You’re welcome Kookoo 🙂

    Good quality rip Paul!

Do you have any of the Mystic Merlin 12″ singles?

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thanks Ex15. Sorry I don;t have anything by them.

Anyone who enjoys this should check out their album, Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful.

Although they’re maybe seen as a one hit wonder (in the UK at least), most of the tracks are on a par with this single. I think a lot of it does come down to that afore mentioned attitude.

Looking forward to hearing the extended mix and amusing sounding b-side.

    DjPaulT Reply:

The b-side is a cool instrumental (love it). The only hit they had in the US was “I Know Wghat Boys Like”.

    Jermajesty Reply:

Pretty much sane as here then, that and this – though I think man on the street would struggle to name who sang either if asked.

Even I Know What Boys Like wasn’t even quite the smash it so deserved!
It was so infectious and so full of laid-back in-yer-face attitude (oxymoron???)
I have this cool Christmas Wrapping in one of the Rhino Xmas compilations. But not thie Long Version. Can’t wait to check it out!
Thanks Santa Paul (aka the younger, slimmer, cuter and more musical counterpart of Santa Claus) for our sending us Christmas Songs in their Christmas Wrapping ! LOL!

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you Ric you are a sweetheart 🙂

    Thanks for this — a long-time favorite.

The “Long Version” of “Christmas Wrapping” has shown up on CD many times over the years. The 4:31 single edit/remix has not, however — even the MP3 you can buy of it on Amazon is a noisy vinyl rip. Would be great to hear one in this quality!
