A. Front

“One of the Living” is a 1985 song recorded by the American singer Tina Turner and became a hit in North-America, peaking in the top 15 in both U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Singles chart. The theme is played over the “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome”‘s opening credits.

The track was one of two songs Turner recorded for the soundtrack for the Australian post-apocalyptic film (in which she also co-starred alongside Mel Gibson). The song was written by Holly Knight who also wrote The Best and Better Be Good To Me, two other mega hits for Tina Turner.

“One of the Living” won Turner a Grammy Award for “Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female”. The song enjoyed a moderate success in Europe and also appears on Turner’s UK hits compilation The Platinum Collection.

Thank you! I’m so happy to have your new rip of this 12″. I notice you have a new copy of the vinyl single. Does this replace the Promo vinyl from your previous post? All the best.

You’re welcome Kookoo. Are you referring to my rip from long ago on blogger? If so yes this is a replacement new transfer. I actually have three copie of this song two US 12″ singles and this UK one.

Paul, do you know if there was a dub version of We Don’t Need Another Hero?

You’re welcome Stefano. There are still a few more to add 🙂

Hi Paul, is this UK pressing really better than the 2 US pressings you got? I wonder, because I don’t really fancy the EMI UK pressings very much.

    DjPaulT Reply:

I noticed that the US pressings seem rather dull not as vibrant.

Yet another great rarity, many thanks Paul! Excellent job with this one! This song is far too overlooked and forgotten about. It was a Top 15 hit, so I don’t know why it’s never turned up on any of Tina’s domestic “Best Of”‘s while “We Don’t Need Another Hero” always turns up.

Hi Dan this 12″ was a bit of a beast to rip all of the crackle that is supposed to be in the song made it very difficult decifer what didn’t belong so I am sure I missed a few. However I think the overall transfer sounds pretty good 🙂

Thank you, sir. I had this myself on 12″ in… 1985? What a memory. Nice mix too. Tina Turner’s stuff really lent itself to the kinds of mixes we got in the 80’s.

I always love it when you re-rip, Paul. THANK YOU!!!
There is a sense of satisfaction and pride when I replace your previous rips in my collection, knowing the quality of sound has been improved yet again.
And I’m not even the ripper! LOL! So I can imagine the feelings you get when you do any re-rip.
I’ve mentioned this before, but Thompson & Barbiero does great remixes…this, Olivia’s Soul Kiss and Heart’s There The Girl are just some fine examples. Sparse yet intense production!

  12. DenverDean Says:

Paul: This is a great single, which as others have mentioned, has been buried in Tina’s catalog. Her vocals are amazing and the sax. The worst part is that in the US, the single remix never appeared on any compilations, etc. (That version is FAR superior to the album mix.) I actually found it on CD years ago – it was a VH1 promo compilation of Tina’s hits. I later got it on The Platinum Collection (Europe). Thank you!
