BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

A. Front

“Touched by the Hand of God” was a single released by New Order in December 1987. The song had originally appeared on the soundtrack to the film Salvation! and the version released as a single was remixed by Arthur Baker. The B-side was a dub remix, titled “Touched by the Hand of Dub”, production duties are credited to New Order. Although not a track pulled for release from a studio album, “Touched by the Hand of God” does appear on the 1994 compilation The Best of New Order and in remixed form on the 1995’s The Rest of New Order. In the US, the song was released as the B-side to the group’s following single “Blue Monday 1988”, though it was billed as a Double A-side on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Maxi-Singles charts.

In New Zealand “Touched By The Hand Of God” peaked at #5, Australia #15, UK #20 and #1 on the US Dance Chart.

Seriously, thanks again for listening. As then, I hope you also consider Subculture next, and maybe some of the latter 90’s NO 12″s for your next NO postings. 🙂

    DjPaulT Reply:

Don’t think I have any 90’s stuff by them and I will have to check and see if I have Subculture.

Excellent choice Paul!! I love New Order and especially with Arthur Baker at the helm makes this one a bonafide favorite. I see someone requested “Subculture” too!!! Because of producer John Robie, this is my favorite New Order 12-inch. I love how you remastered John’s “Shellshock/Shellcock” so I’d give anything to hear this twelve ripped as well. Gee Paul, all these requests must make your head spin!! I hope you’re not overwhelmed by it all. You certainly deserve a VACATION from Vinyl for a while.

Thanks Jeff I don’t mind the requests sometimes it opens me up to things I have never heard and end up loving. I will see what I can do about “Subculture” 🙂

Agree about Subculture. It is one of New Order’s most overlooked singles, chart-wise and with fans. But I love the song and the Robie Remix.
Thanks for another Synth-post, Paul. And quite strange that this was never on any not their studio albums…I understand the version of the Soundtrack is an exclusive mix?

You’re welcome Ric i’ll have to check out the soundtrack version I have never heard it.

Yeah, I don’t know why fans were against this John Robie re-production? John worked on “Confusion” with Arthur Baker and then again on “Shellshock” and “Shame of the Nation” too. The mix was radical, but forward-thinking as well. It had a Gothic feel because of the harpsichord synth. John Robie mixes are quite daring and he’s never fully acknowledged for his work. So surprised that today’s electronic artists don’t seek him out more? My dream is to one day have Erasure and/or The Pet Shop Boys integrate him on their productions. I won’t give up the dream.

For anyone seeking “Sub-culture” (remember the hyphen!), I knew I’d seen it posted recently on one of the blogs I follow, and I’ve found it, 320kbps mp3 and almost certainly sourced from the excellent Recycle fan remastering project: http://yourrecordplayer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/sub-culture.html
