Magda Layna – When Will I See You Again (US 12″)

A. Front

“When Will I See You Again” is a song written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and originally recorded by American Soul group The Three Degrees in 1974. The song was one of the most successful recordings of the “Philly Soul” era. Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the song was placed on the list of post-9/11 inappropriate titles distributed by Clear Channel.

In 1983 Megatone Records recording artist Magda Layna released a Hi-NRG/Disco version of the song which received heavy rotation in dance clubs. Megatone Records was founded in San Francisco by legendary dance music composer and recording artist Patrick Cowley.

Very collectible piece of High Energy music from Megatone. This was included in Casey Jones’ list of the Top 200 High Energy songs of the eighties (published in Dance Music Report magazine). Saw her live once, she didn’t really know how to work the crowd up, but this song holds wonderful memories for me. Many thanks for this post.

You’re welcome Gianni and thank you for the interesting facts 🙂

A beautiful song by first done by The Three Degrees, and this is in fact Prince Charles’ favourite song back in the 70s, but I doubt the “You” in the song refers to Princess Di.
Anyhow, I don’t think I’ve heard a terrible cover yet. Testament to the strength of the song itself.
Thanks Paul for posting this Hi-NRG version!
Ahh, the headband…80s fashion. Paul, was Olivia the one to champion that or it was already a fad before Physical?

    DjPaulT Reply:

Ric If memory serves me well I think Olivia started that fad 🙂

DJ Paul, I had to turn to Google to see what you were talking about, this list by Clear Channel. I am really surprised how caught up I got in the post 9/11 media coverage, that this particular news bit slipped past me. I was watching a live feed when the 2nd tower got hit, it really broke my heart for years to follow. My mom took me to see the view from the top of the towers in the 1980s. Oh well, a lot gets past me, I can’t deny it anymore, people have been trying to tell me for years. That would really be a shame if those songs never got played again, there’s a lot of really good ones on the list, if these songs were deemed inappropriate after 9/11, they would have to be so after every time somebody passed away. They could never be heard again. It looks like an over-zealous Church lady got out a red pen and every playlist she could find and just crossed out every song having to do with saying goodbye forever or for the last time, explosions, machinery, snowboarding, New York City, being in the sky, going to or from the North African continent, or moving your body in any direction while on that continent, war, fire, being generally angry, and the end of life. I am trying to remember which version of “When Will I See You Again” I have listened to before, and I have a feeling it was probably the other one you mention. I like HiNRG (Sylvester?), Taffy is another example of HiNRG I can think of, with the “I Love My Radio” song.
