Patti LaBelle – Oh, People (The JM Remix) (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on September 11th, 2013

A. Front

“Oh, People” is the second single from Winner in You, the eighth solo album from Patti LaBelle, released on June 30, 1986. The song is a socially conscious anthem with lyrics pleading to individuals to unite and “build the world we want together.”

The song was a moderate success, reaching number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 7 on the Billboard R&B chart while also reaching number 26 in the United Kingdom. It also reached several European charts peaking at number 31 in the Netherlands (AKA the Dutch singles chart) and number 36 in New Zealand.

In the UK two seperate 12″ singles were released both with different A side remixes. The first a remix by Richard Perry (Extended Remix Version) and the second included a remix by Julian Mendelsohn (The JM MIx). For this post I have included the Richard Perry mix as a bonus.

I was waiting for this one! So you got a hold of a clean mint copy, ehh?
The intro of the JM mix is rather difficult to rip (or to sweeten up). I’ll be amazed to what you did, I’m sure!

And so great to combine the Richard Perry remixes too in this post. Thanks a lot Paul. Such a great track! These mixes were never released on CD before. Great! Great! Great!

Thought this was fitting for today 9/11 and all that is going on in this crazy world. The intro was a bit of monster but I think it turned out pretty good. Let me know what you think Stefano 🙂

    Stefano Reply:

Very very appropriate for today! Great choice.

I bet the intro of the JM mix was a horrid to get right, ha ha! Especially for sound freaks like us. But the result is beyond any believe. This rip is cristal clear, even in the last minutes. WOW!

The JM mix is a great remix, I’ve listened to it 3 times now. Don’t get enough of it.
I used to edit the part between approx 3:50 till 4:50 minutes out of the mix, because that interlude somehow kills the flow of the mix, I think. But nevertheless: such an amazing remix. I also like the ad libs at the end which weren’t used in the album version, nor the RP remix.

Paul, you’ve made my evening (in the Netherlands it’s almost midnight now). So appreciated! Thank you man.

Oh you’re welcome Stefano glad to hear that it sounds good to you. Wow it’s late ther. It’s just now 4:00 pm here getting ready for dinner. Get some sleep my friend 🙂

    Stefano Reply:

Good? It’s excellent! Top! Superb! Awesome!

Have a nice dinner 🙂 When I’m going to sleep in a few minutes, I will share a thought on the men and women who lost their lives today 12 years ago. And in particular to all their family and friends who stayed behind…

    I agree with Stefano: “Great!”
    ..Especially on my birthday…))
Thanks a lot dear Paul! 🙂

    Great choice, Paul.
And, I played the heck out of my JM mix way back then.
I preferred what Julian Mendelsohn did.
He also did my fave mix of Bob Marley’s “Waiting In Vain” – the 7″ mix was perfect and hasn’t been released on CD (the 12″ has).
Also, check out JM’s mixes of Go West too 🙂
    Thanks for sharing!

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Disco D. I have most if not all of the Go West singles already posted 🙂

    yes! Yes! YES!!!
I’ve been hoping this will turn up here on BTG, Paul…and you finally did it! On such a very appropriate day too.
I must admit I wasn’t in love with this single when released after the mega-success that is On My Own. I don’t hate it, it simply didn’t end up as a fervent favourite. However, with the passing of time and the arrival of old age (LOL!), I’ve learnt to appreciate the subtleties of this song. Love the remixeS (brownie points to Paul for adding the bonus!) and that ad-lib is fabulous!
Oh People, Paul is surely the best!

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thank you Ric. I am like you I never really appreciated this track until old age set in 🙂 But hey they say things only get better with age. Enjoy!

  5. franco Says:

: thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU! i’ve been waiting for this for what seems like forever. you truly are the man!
    thank you, paul!

You’re welcome Franco. I am glad I was able to post this. Looks like it made a few people happy 🙂

Great song.:) I’ve never heard any remixes of this before. Thanks.

Another catchy Patti LaBelle song is the end theme from Beverley Hills Cop.

Yeah great song Music_Fan I think I have posted it before 🙂

  7. spoinny Says:

I never cared for this track until recently as well! I remember wondering why Patti released such a mellow song after “on my own” at the time. Now it is one of my favorites! should have been a much bigger hit.

Your web hosting site is saying, “forbidden,” for the MP3 version. *Whaaaaaaa!!!!!*
