Jody Watley – Where The Boys Are (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on September 10th, 2013

A. Front

“Where The Boys Are” was the first solo single released by Jody Watley after her split with the group Shalamar.

In 1984 Watley started recording for a solo album in the UK and released two promo singles, “Where The Boys Are” and “Girls Night Out” under just her first name. The songs didn’t spark much fanfare, thus the proposed album was never crafted. The b-side for both singles was “My House (4-Free)”, which later became a club hit in 1990 for Paul Lekakis, the famed singer of “Boom, Boom (Let’s Go Back To My Room)”. Watley would later go on to become a Grammy winner and acheive international fame with her deut self titled album in 1987.

The tracks on this 12″ have never been released on CD as far as I know.

Wow, what a score. I haven’t listened yet but I’m DLing as I type this. I knew that Jody wrote “My House” sung by Paul Lekakis (which I love) but had no idea she had previously released it. Can’t wait to listen to this. Thanks Paul!!!!

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome VJ Tre. Jody’s version of “My House” is a bit less produced than Paul’s but it is great. I plan to post Jody’s other early single “Girls Night Out” in the near future. Enjoy 🙂

thanks for this – nice to get in decent quality. Love Jody and Shalamar. Would love the 12″ of dead giveaway as this is one of the obscure mixes to get anywhere.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hi Sarah I have the “Dead Giveaway” 12″ but I think it the “Extended Version” is the same as the album version bith are 5:00. I will try to get it posted at some point though.

    Sarah Reply:

Hi Paul, that was quick! The difference is the 12″ is the same mix/length but doesn’t have the guitar parts in it – its the same apart from that.
I’ve got a vinyl rip of it but its scratchy – nothing like your masterpieces!!!

    DjPaulT Reply:

Ok thanks for letting me know Sarah I havn’t listened to mine in years.

    Thanks for some Jody, Paul!

Remember the huge “uproar” when Jody when nominated, and then won the Best New Artist despite being in Shalamar. The Whitney camp especially wasn’t pleased as Whitney was disqualified in that category in 1986 due to the fact that despite being a minor hit, her credited duet with Teddy Pendergrass actually charted in 1984. So Whitney can’t be considered as a new artist. Jody’s solo name, meanwhile, never appeared on the Hot 100 before Looking For A New Love.

Aaaaand ‘Everyone’ thought a certain Terence Trent D’Arby was gonna win as well.(Apprently-depending on what Music Mags U read, as 4 Jody. It was partly ‘cos of the way she was treated by her previous Label (Solar) + that She Owed Them Money (technically!). Plus the single with George Michael that never was etc etc (more Slaps in th’ face!) Ultimately they must’ve thought Whitney was gonna Sell Shedloads. Jody’s ‘New Artist’ award was obviously some kinda (lol) reward for all the hard work she did in Shalamar. She WAS Shalamar for a heck of a lot of fans, and deserved the Award. After all they are kinda ‘meaningless’ – It just says You Have ‘Fans’ in the ‘Industry’.

I have been looking for the longest time, I have the 7″ & 12″ but wanted it for my iPod.
I can’t access any of your songs now, it needs a name/password registration?
I din’t have this problem before.

  9. Russ Says:

    Thanks Paul!
I’ve not heard this since it first came out aged 14!!!

I was with a friend going to up to London for the day quite early in the morning with some friends when I saw a man putting up a billboard poster for this single. Needless to say I ended up with a full length (6 ft) poster – I couldn’t miss the opportunity.

You might wanna be wary of telling anyone about this or the other ‘Jody’ track !
I get the distinct impression Jody HATES to be reminded of this ‘non-hit’ phase of her career as it were. She has referred to these tracks ‘in passing’ as Club Promos so not exactly admitting they got an Official release = just NOT in America.
She’s blocked me on soundclound, when all I’ve done is Rave about her ???
I did post a few of her X-Mas Techno trax [My Lovely Santa Claus…ye rare !] maybe she’s embarrassed of them as well ?
