BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

A. Front

Blue Zone UK was a 1980s British synth-pop band (simply called Blue Zone in the UK, Europe and Australia; but adding the “UK” due to a naming dispute in the United States). The group consisted of Lisa Stansfield (lead vocals), Ian Devaney (trombone, keyboards, guitar, backing vocals) and Andy Morris (trumpet, flugelhorn, electronic keyboards and backing vocals).

“Jackie” was the third single taken from the bands only album “Big Thing” which was released in 1988. “Jackie” became the groups highest charting single reaching #19 Sweden, #54US. In the bands native UK the single failed to chart. For the US single release non album track “Chance It” was used as the single’s b-side.

After the release of “Jackie” the trio and label Arista decided to focus on Stansfield’s solo career. Morris would co-write and co-produce the first three Stansfield albums, before departing the trio. Devaney and Stansfield would eventually marry, and now own a music publishing business, and continue to write and record together.

Nice coincidence. Last weekend I discovered a copy of Finest Thingsat a small record store in Nuremberg. I had never heard of BLUE ZONE before and finally bought it, because I read Lisa Stanfieöd’s name on the cover. And only a few days later you come up with this… 🙂

    Cheers

Elisa Fiorillo recorded this song, as well. Her version was included on the Summer School Soundtrack. Other than her pitch being a bit higher (and a bit more nasal) than Stansfield’s, the two versions practically sound identical. It’s widely found on the net if anyone’s interested in hearing it.

Never got into Elisa it’ll be interesting to hear her version 🙂

    ric Reply:

Lisa’s vocals is definitely more suited for this song. And Elisa was only 15 years old when her version came out. So it is definitely more high-pitched. LOL!
    Thanks for your rip, Paul!

So that’s where I’ve heard this song before. I knew I had never heard of Blue Zone before, but when I listened to this song it seemed familiar but I couldn’t place it. Now I get the Summer School connection. That is the version of the song I’m familiar with. Really like this version too and it’s really cool to learn about Lisa’s earlier work before her solo hits.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Keep the LISA coming!!! I just preordered her new album, “7”, from Amazon UK and it will be released in October. One of the best contemporary R&B/Pop vocalists of the last several decades.

To hear this early track in DJ PAUL T crispness is AMAZING.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!

Hi Lee feeling great these day just getting older lol. Nice to see you again 🙂

    ric Reply:

You’re right, Lee. I remember that story. Really unlucky for Blue Zone. Pet Shop Boys was also approached to release Kings Cross as a benefit single to raise funds for the tragedy, but the boys too, thought it would be in bad taste.

I’ve totally forgot about this song until I heard it again after the download. The tune was lost in some dusted cluster on my hard disc brain, but thanks to you i brought it back. Sadly it was a big under-rated hit.

Had no idea it was Lisa Standsfield’s voice. Thanks a lot for share it with us.

Like ‘Wow’ ! – Lisa was HUGE @ 1 time – though kinda forgot. The Video of her singing ‘All Around The World’ Live at the Harlem Apollo IS Amazing=the way the crowd don’t just ‘Sing Along’ they Perform it with her, It’s Brilliant. She said that the way the ‘Black media/radio etc’ just accepted her(cos it’s a Gr8 Song !) Was an extra special compliment since she was such a fan of American ‘real’ R&B ! She also has a “Pre-Pre-Career” cos I found in a Charity shop a single by her called ‘The Only Way’ which was one of the tracks a previous Label tried to re-issue/cash-in. But she sued them and won= Cos it’s not The Same ‘Lisa Stansfield’ + people’d be conned. The 7 Inch Single wasn’t the WORST single ever – a ‘Spirited’ very early ’80’s sub Sheena Easton type tune. Hope Ye post more Early Lisa stuff XxX

This song was remade in 1999 and it was a big hit down here in Australia. I, personally, always hated it, but I thought it would be of interest you and anybody else who was unaware. 😀
