Classix Nouveaux – Guilty (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1981

A. Front

Classix Nouveaux was one of the first new romantic acts in England. Although Classix Nouveaux’s more guitar-heavy sound separated them from the mostly synthetic rhythms of Japan and Ultravox, the group’s appetite for stylish fashion and danceable keyboards had them quickly associated with the new romantic movement.

In 1981, Classix Nouveaux released “Guilty,” their most well-known track; “Guilty” was a Top-20 hit in Sweden, and the video received airplay on MTV. In the UK the single reached #43 while in the US it peaked at #66 on the Billboard dance chart.

I have the 12″. But your version Paul sounds so much better. My copy is all worn out. Thanks for the post.

Their most well known song??? In the UK that would be Is It a Dream?! (reached No. 11, in fact the only one to break the Top 40 according to wiki))

I didn’t actually realise they had any other success, esp overseas. Will be interesting to hear this.

I also didn’t find out till last year that half of these lot were ex-X-Ray Spex.

    Thanx Paul. 🙂

Guess “Guilty” was the most well known in the US since thay charted on the dance chart. I got my info from Allmusic.

Are they considered a One Hit Wonder in the US?

It’s funny, there’s a chord progression in the verse that really reminds me of Born To Run. 😀 Can you hear it?

Also, are the two mixes in different keys? I think Dead Or Alive did that sort of thing toowith My Heart Goes Bang, the 7″ version sounds a different key to the Youthquake version.

I remember this, but I agree Is It A Dream? was their best-known track on this side of the pond. One of the band (Mik Sweeney?) went on to play with Vision, but not on their electro-goth-pop classic Lucifer’s Friend

I really love the sound from this band, so for me, I think their value was not well represented in the charts. This is one of their better songs in my opinion. Thanks for the post!

Great song and a good remix of it. I had no idea this had made the Billboard charts in the USA. I remember the video being a prototype of Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes (New Romantics dancing away …).

A pretty uderrated sin in my opinion. I’m just happy that it did have some US success even if it was minor 🙂

Thanks Paul for more New Wave!
Besides Guilty and Is It A Dream, I like The End Or The Beginning a lot too.
But I must say Sal Solo’s solo singles are my ultimate favourites…especially San Damiano (Heart And Soul) and Music And You. Perfect melodies!

You’re welcome Ric! I’m not familiar with the other tracks but I am gonna get familiar lol.

I have the Because You’re Young 12″, which is pretty good. Sal Solo went on to make some awful Christian music.

Ric is right – ‘San Damiano’ especially – is Sal Solo’s crowning achievement. Did you ever search that song out and have a listen, Paul?
