Jeff Lynne – Video! (German 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on May 7th, 2013

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

A. Front

“Video!” is a song by Jeff Lynne from the soundtrack to the film Electric Dreams in 1984. It is one of two songs that Lynne and keyboard player Richard Tandy provided for the film’s soundtrack. The single version is 3:26 in length, while the version included in the film is longer, at 4:18.

The chorus of “Video!” is originally taken from the unreleased Electric Light Orchestra song “Beatles Forever”, which was originally to have appeared on the album, Secret Messages, when it was planned to be a double album.

“Video!” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 on August 18, 1984 and later peaked at #85 on the survey.

The b-side of the 12″ includes the “Instrumental” version of “Video!” and a non album track “Sooner Or Later” also recorded with his keyboardist Richard Tandy. All tracks are vinyl only and have not appeared on CD.

I hope this means you’re going through the single releases from Electric Dreams- several more to go if you are! PP Arnold’s Electric Dreams, Oakey & Moroder’s Together In Electric Dreams, & Culture Club’s Love Is Love still to go! 🙂

As I mentioned yesterday I don’t have the P.P. Arnold 12″ at the moment. Once I get more donations i’ll be happy to buy a copy. I will be posting the Oakey & Moroder 12″ and the Culture Club “love Is Love” Japanese 12″.

I just a small donation that should cover the purchase price of PP Arnold’s 12″ at discogs. I have the German copy, but it’s not in the greatest shape. (And could never make a quality rip like you do, Paul!) Love Is Love from Japan is a good choice, (as it’s the only release to have a not-on-CD B-side) but the artwork from the European editions match the releases from this album- any thoughts of including the European artwork as a bonus to that one once it’s posted (if you have it?) About the only thing better than your rips are your scans!

Hi David. thank you for the donation 🙂 I don’t have the European Edition of “Love Is Love” indeed the artwork is fune maybe I will try to locate that one someday too 🙂 Thanks again.

OMG DJPaul I can’t believe you’ve never seen this film??! It was possibly my number one fave as a teenager, I must’ve watched it 100 times. I know it backwards. I went to SF twice trying to find Miles’s house used in the film! (got it second time 🙂 )

Watching it today does it look a bit weird. It’s a sort of musical I suppose, but with pop videos interspersing the dialogue rather than characters bursting into song. I believe the whole film was really just made as a giant promo for Virgin artists, the next logical step after the likes of Thriller, etc…

Love Is Love is my fave track, has a very special place in my stupid teenage heart. 😀

    Another good week on BTG!!!

Jermajesty I don’t know how I have missed this movie over the years it sounds like it is right up my ally. I guess i will have to track the DVd down since it’s not on blu-ray yet. I have a song that has a special place in my stupid teenage heart too “I’m Your Man” by Wham! maybe i’ll explain that story when I get round to posting it 🙂

    Jermajesty Reply:

In the film, Edgar (the computer) writes this song for Miles to give to his love interest, to impress her, only with very different lyrics. 😀

He supposedly makes the song from backwards samples of the Catch That Pepsi Spirit commercial, but having played Jeff Lynne’s version backwards I can’t hear any. Miles complains the song’s completely unsuitable, so the computer writes Love Is Love the next day.

Aww Paul you’ve got to see this film! The whole thing’s on YouTube at the moment, albeit the size of a postage stamp. 😀

    DjPaulT Reply:

Bummer just checked Amazon and this movie has not even been released on DVD in the US.

    The Doctor Reply:

I don’t think it’s been released on DVD anywhere; I’d be surprised if it even made it to LaserDisc, back in the day… (Then again, it’s surprising what turns up on LD sometimes.)

    DjPaulT Reply:

Amazon UK shows a DVD but unfortunately it’s PAL format and will not play on US player. That region code thing is really ridiculous in my opinion.

    Jermajesty Reply:

Even back in the day it wasn’t released on home video for YEARS. I had to hire a rental copy and dub it by sneaking our family VCR out the house and round to my mate’s to do a tape to tape. 😀

Paul, I’m sure I can get a region-free playable copy to you somehow! :o)

    DjPaulT Reply:

Your naughty Jermajesty just kidding lol. That would be very cool if you could do that i’d appreciate it. By the way the DD RSD 7″ arrived today beautiful! Thank you.

    the doctor Reply:

Well, PAL vs. NTSC is a real distinction; the video formats actually are different. (25 frames/second, 625 vertical scan lines per frame, vs. 30fps and 525 lines for NTSC.) Has nothing to do with region coding; even if the DVD were region-free, your DVD player might not accept it. (Not that the region locks aren’t stupid in themselves.)

However, if you get hold of the DVD, you can rip it on your PC and play it that way; DVDFabDecrypter will circumvent the region codes and rip the content to your hard drive. I’ve done this with a number of foreign titles.
