Boy George – Sold (Canada 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A. Front

“Sold” was the third single to be released from the debut solo album of the same name by English singer-songwriter Boy George. Like the previous singles from the album “Sold” did well in many European countries but was ignored in America this may be due in part to the fact that George was prohibited by US authorities from travelling to the United States for several years because of his British drug charges. He was therefore unable to be in America to help promote the album and it’s singles. The single debuted on the UK singles chart on July 18, 1987 peaking at #24.

The b-side “Are You Too Afraid?” was produced and co-written by Culture Club band mate Roy Hay the track does not appear on the album. The “Go Go Mix” of “Everything I Own” is the same mix that appears on the US 12″ single titled 12″ Remix. This version is remixed by Freddy Bastone.

I went to see him do a guest spot at this tiny little pub a couple of years back.

I guessed he’d nip out for a fag during the interval, so even though I don’t smoke I went outside and was literally standing next to him for about 10 mins. There was only a few other people hanging about, it was so intimate, but I could not think of one thing to say to him that wouldn’t have sounded fawning or completely retarded. So I just kept silent! :-/ I didn’t even brave asking for a photo!! Regret that now.

He was dead friendly with everyone though, laughing with all the locals and just being really, really normal.

That’s a cool story sounds like he would have been really approachable. I probably would have done the same thing you did. But then again I did stalk Olivia when I went to see her back in October. It paid off got a pic and autograph.

Jer, you should be glad that you keep your cool.
When I met my idols Neil & Chris, my fervor took over and I think I acted “overly-enthusiastic”. Being the nonchalant cucumbers they are, I must have come across like some lunatic. It is so embarrassing on hindsight now

Wow, I didn’t know there was a single for this! The b-side (produced by Roy Hay) is a treat for me being a longtime Culture Club fan. Never heard it before! Do you have a single for “Keep Me in Mind” as well?

    [Reply]

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome doug. Yes I do have “Keep Me In Mind” I plan to post it tomorrow. If I am not mistaken the b-sides are produced by Roy Hay also 🙂

    Doug Reply:

Can’t wait to hear them tomorrow! 🙂 I didn’t know he did songs with George in ’87.

    ric Reply:

I love Keep Me In Mind, with diva Jocelyn Brown on backup. My 12″ has the normal album version. Does yours have any extended/remix, Paul?
As for Roy Hay, his project This Way Up is fabulous but underrated. I love all the three singles…Tell Me Why, If I Can’t Have You (yes, that disco cover!) and Louise.

    [Reply]

    DjPaulT Reply:

Ric the b-side tracks are extended remixes.

    Andy Reply:

Roy’s This Way Up’s cd is pretty good. It has the extended versions of the two songs you mentioned Ric, but not the 12″ remix of Louise, sadly. I have the 12″ and heard it once on a friend’s turntable. Now it sits in my closet gathering dust.

I bought those vinyl album and 12″ singles too, mine gathering cobwebs now! Great 80s times nonetheless!

I cant wait for State of Love & I Pray!!!
I’m hoping you have the 7″ version of State of Love too.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hi Cdmaniac sorry I only have the 12″.

  9. ric Says:

Thanks for another Georgie Boy post, Paul!
Never realized they included the Bastone Mix in his UK 12″! To have it in HQ now…Awesome!

    [Reply]

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hi Ric yeah this one has the Bastone 12″ Mix but the US 12″ also has the Bastone “Dub” and “Remix Edit”.

The more Boy George the better! So much of his 12-inch work and non-LP b-sides remain un-reissued. . .
