Billy Idol – To Be A Lover (Rock N’ Roll Mix) (Australia Ltd. Edition 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

A. Front

“To Be a Lover” is a song by Billy Idol from his 1986 album Whiplash Smile. As the album’s lead single, it became Idol’s second top 10 hit in the US, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track was the second high profile cover Idol had released as a single, after 1981’s “Mony Mony.”

The single was backed by Whiplash Smile album track “All Summer Single” and featured two remixes of the A-side – “Mother of Mercy Mix” and “Rock’n’Roll Mix”.

Special note about this single: The “Rock N’ Roll Mix” is exclusive to this Australian release and as far as I know has not appeared on any other official Billy Idol release. The mix did appear on a So80s compilation but was transfered from vinyl.

Thanks Paul! Another 12″ where I had no idea that there was something exclusive on it! I’ve got this one somewhere, too.

After the Bowie from the other day, are you going through an “Australia only exclusive” theme? 🙂

    [Reply]

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hi MicMij probably not an Aussie exclusive theme. These Austrlian singles are pretty hard to come by 🙂

This is amazing! I adored the Mother Of Mercy mix when I was a kid – never knew there was a second 12” remix out there.

Have you got the two different 12” versions of Don’t Need A Gun (the follow up single)? They also had exclusive mixes. I ripped them from my vinyl ages ago but nowhere near the standard of your sublime transfers

    DjPaulT Reply:

Hi Rob at the moment I only have one of the “Don’t Need A Gun” singles the US Melt Down Mix there is another from the UK called “The Beyond Melt Down Mix” that I am working on getting a copy of. Hopefully I can post them both at a later date 🙂

Son of a gun… I liked Billy Idol back in the day, but I must’ve missed this one somehow, or at least I don’t remember it… Or are these mixes radically different enough from the original that my swiss-cheese brain just isn’t making the connection? 🙂

    DjPaulT Reply:

Doctor that’s easy to do 🙂

Thanks for this track. Classic Billy Idol.

I was watching the 1983 film ‘Christine’ a few days ago. It’s recently been released on Blu-ray. Christine is an evil car and her signature tune is ‘Bad To The Bone’. When it was being played in the film I assumed it was Billy Idol singing (the track is also featured in Terminator 2 when the T-800 cyborg puts on the shades) but when I saw the end credits I was surprised to find it that it wasn’t him but a singer called George Thorogood. Compare Thorogood’s voice:

    with Billy Idol’s voice:

    Spooky similarity!

You’re welcome Music_fan yeah I just recentlt bought the “Christine” bl-ray from Twilight Time ne of my favorite films. Thorogood is a well known classic rock singer the vocals are similar.

Wow! learn something new today! Wasn’t aware of the Rock N Roll Mix. Thanks Paul! A great start to the week indeed!
And the So80s compilations should be renamed soLOUD80s…
My favourite Idol single has to be the sublime Eyes Without A Face, but it came without a 12″ remix though.

    DjPaulT Reply:

I agree about the soLOUD80s lol. Eyes Without A Face Is one of my favorites too. Wonder why there wasn’t a remix quite perplexing.

Great 12” looking for this one thanks Paul.

PS can you fix the Steve Winwood Freedom Overspill 12” ? The link is dead

I was trying to find it online but there no links anywhere online but I did find the Liberty Mix on youtube but it was a little scratchy.
