“Pretty In Pink” is a song by the English rock band The Psychedelic Furs, originally released in 1981 as a single from the band’s second album, Talk Talk Talk. The song inspired the 1986 film of the same name and a re-recorded version of the song was included on the film’s soundtrack.

The original version of “Pretty in Pink” peaked at number 43 on the UK Singles Chart in July 1981. Allmusic writer Bill Janovitz credits producer Steve Lillywhite for finding “the ideal sound for the band, with a perfect blend of classic pop, punk, and art rock elements”. Janovitz called it “the definitive take” of the song.

The 1986 version reached number 18 in the UK and number 41 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart. Janovitz described this version as “ho-hum, streamlined, (and) radio-ready”.

You’re welcome Jermajesty! I think I would call it a bit of maybe new wave/synth-pop just my opinion. There is definately synths in this track.

    Jermajesty Reply:

Synthpop over here is more something like early Soft Cell, early Depeche, Human League, Howard Jones, where there’s not a guitar in sight.

    Titbit time!

John Hughes 1986 movie was actually inspired by the original 1981 single. The Furs were even paid 120,000 pounds for the use of the title for the film.

The song is about a girl who looks nice in her “…birthday suit”…hence pretty in pink. She has a lot of different lovers and thinks that really makes her good and special, and that everyone is in love with her. But the fact is that the boys who slept with her don’t even care! The song is more about the boys’ attitude than the girl’s.

Thanks for your rip, Paul. This soundtrack is such a part of my life in 1986, bought the tape, vinly and later CD.

    Excellent choice, Paul.

It reminded of FLESH FOR LULU’s “Postcards From Paradise”, which would be nice seeing here.

    Hi Paul,

Not sure if you read comments on old posts, but I’m in a deep Psychedelic Furs swoon right now and would love to see a couple of new posts from them if you’re so inclined. 🙂 Listened through my later era 12″es tonight, Heartbreak Beat, All That Money Wants, House. Great mixes and b-sides to be found there. Just a thought.
