BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1978

Side 1

DISCO FRIDAY!

Hot Shot was the name of a popular disco single recorded by American singer Karen Young. The single, which is also the name of her 1978 album, reached number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart the week of August 5, 1978 and spent two weeks there.

The track also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it only got as far as number 67 that same year. Although this single would make Young a one-hit wonder, “Hot Shot” is still considered by many as a club classic and an Old School radio staple to this day. “Hot Shot” was also featured in the 1990 movie “Reversal of Fortune” and was later used as a sample in Daft Punk’s song “Indo Silver Club” on their 1996 album Homework.

n 2007, nearly 30 years after the original charted and 16 years after Young’s death (in 1991), MaxRoxx Music released “Hot Shot: The Karen Young Reheat,” which is an updated version of “Hot Shot,” this time with new mixes using the original’s vocals. This version, which charted as “Hot Shot 2007,” also reached the Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it peaked at number 7 in March 2008. Also, in 1999, Blondie recorded a cover of the song and included it on the Japanese edition of their album No Exit and “No Exit” single.

Karen Young died of a bleeding ulcer in January 1991, at age 39.

FINALLY, some good disco sound! The obvious value of this 12″ is the instrumental, since the vocal can be found in numerous CD compilations. But I look forward to experience the BTG treatment of the vinyl sound, which most of the times is a lot better of “remastered” equivalents. A powerful smash which conquered the dancefloors in its era, still creates a difference on many dancefloors around the world. Although it has been remixed (and covered) many times over the years, nothing compares to the original. Another favourite of mine from the same LP is “Bring on the boys”, also released on 12″ with extended disco version. There are some acetates of “Hot Shot” circulating with a John Morales mix, which I didn’t have the honour to lay my ear on (yet). Thanks for the treat, Paul and happy week-end everyone!

Oh, Paul, that would be just GREAT! I have this release: http://www.discogs.com/Karen-Young-Bring-On-The-Boys/release/1335342 The pressing is excellent, on heavy vinyl and features TWO extended versions of the rest of the (disco-interesting) tracks of the album. Note: They both actually time at 7:22 (!) (Not a type-error as I first thought). By the way, your transfer of “Hot Shots” sounds better than ever. Thanks again!

    Dear Paul,
I 1st ‘Disco-Vered’ this when I was flicking through ‘the channels’ on TV.
{quite easy as we only had 4 in the UK @ the time !)
When I caught sound of an ‘obvious DISCO track’
& thought ‘I thought ‘The Snooker’ was on’.
It was, only they had been using this track to play behind the best shots in the snooker game -so far.
    [hence ‘Hot-Shot !]
Never ‘knew by whom’ till years later.
