Genesis – Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (US 12″)

“Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” is the second track on the 1986 album Invisible Touch by Genesis. It peaked at number three in the U.S. and number 18 in the UK as the fourth single from the album. The working title was “Monkey, Zulu”.

The single included an edited version of the song (at 4:28) and the first part of “Domino” (“In The Glow of the Night”) as the B-side. This shorter version was used in the later compilation Turn It On Again: The Hits. Some singles that included the full version of the song included the second part of “Domino” (“The Last Domino”) as the B-side. Other releases contained the rare track “Paperlate” and a 12″ remix of “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight”.

The song was performed in concerts in support of Invisible Touch between 1986 and 1988. A shorter version (which segued into “Invisible Touch”) was played on the We Can’t Dance and Turn It On Again tours, albeit transposed down a key to account for the deepening of Phil Collins’ voice over the years.

Hi Paul, just GREAT to have all these 12 inches by Genesis!

The main single which is still missing is the extended ‘Mama’. I believe the German pressed 1992 CD single doesn’t contain the full length long version of 7:28, but clocks a half mniute earlier at 6:57.

    DjPaulT Reply:

Thanks Stefano 🙂 I have “Mamma” in que for a future posting.

    Alessandro Reply:

Most of all the German CD-single from 1992 is heavily no-noised, and you can also hear a sort of sound ”adjustment” at the very beginning of Mama, where the volume drops down significantly. In conclusion, it is a very bad cd edition.
The rarer Dutch 1988 3-inch CD-single is much better, it is a faithful flat transfer of the original tapes, even if it still sounds somewhat ”sterile”.
In my opinion, once Paul put his magic doing his own transfer, i’m 110% sure it will be the definitive version, you won’t need any other.

Thank you Alessandro I hope that when I do rip it that it turns out to be fab!

This post came up on my Facebook feed and I let out a small squeal of delight, much to the surprise of everyone else in the room at the time. Thank you for posting this Paul.

Once again a stellar sounding rendition of another great Genesis maxi-single. Many thanks as usual, i hope the series is to be continued… 😉

Damn – this is a flashback to high school! Probably my favorite Genesis single, with a decent mix by John Potoker. It’s one of those songs that actually sounds best at night. And if I recall correctly, the track was pimped out to Budweiser for a TV ad. Thanks Paul!

Thanks Paul. I didn’t have this one.
