John Travolta – A Girl Like You (US 12″ Promo)

Posted by DjPaulT on October 19th, 2012

Before he was Tony Manero (Saturday Night Fever) or Danny Zucko (Greae). The one time disco dancing king of New York, was a recording artist.”A Girl Like You” was initially released the year before he strutted his stuff to the Bee Gees soundtrack in Saturday Night Fever.

The song was sampled in 1999 by Canadian hip-hop outfit Len and featured Biz Markie for the track Beautiful Day. “A Girl Like You” was first released in 1976 as the B-side to “Back Doors Crying” and then re-issued in 1979 on a 12″ as the A-side. “A Girl Like You” was also featured on Travolta’s ’76 album “Can’t Let You Go”.

The 12″ plays the same track on both sides and features a picture label of Travolta during his 1977 Playgirl magazine photo shoot. One of my favorite disco single’s and well worth checking out.

Thanks for sharing this extended version. For the people who’ve never heard either of Travolta’s solo LPs (or that of his “classmate” Lawrence Hilton Jacobs) until this posting, you’ll be surprised that some of the top names in the dance world were involved with very listenable results for both artists. It’s pop but it’s quality pop.

    DjPaulT Reply:

i totally agree with you VanceMan this is really quality material. This song has such a great groove love it!

OMG! I have this 12″, too! And I needed a GOOD rip! I always thought I should find a copy of that issue of the magazine, too… Thanks, Paul! Have a nice weekend!

You’re welcome George E. Hope you have a great weekend too 🙂

Never heard the 12″ version for this before so this is special.
I also thought his cover of Never Gonna Fall In Love Again is as beautiful as Eric Carmen’s.
Seems like he is more keen on his acting career as opposed to his singing one though.
Thanks for another glittering treat for your Disco Friday, Paul!
    And the weekend is here!

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Ric. It’s interesting to think about what might have happened had he pursued singing over acting. Happy weekend 🙂

    Jonathan Reply:

Well, we’d have been spared some terrible movies, for a start…

  6. Jonathan Says:

Thanks for posting some rare tracks, Paul, but I can see why this is rare – the vocals are really quite awful. He’s never been a great actor, but he’s a lousy singer.
