BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“State of Shock” is a 1984 hit single by The Jacksons featuring frontman Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger. It was written by Jackson and guitarist Randy Hansen. “State of Shock” charted number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the UK Singles Chart. The track was originally to be sung with Freddie Mercury as a duet with Jackson, and was later slated for the Thriller album; however, due to differing time schedules, Jackson ended up recording it with his brothers and Jagger.

“State of Shock” was the biggest hit from The Jacksons’ Victory album, reaching number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 14 on the UK SinglesChart. The song was originally recorded with Freddie Mercury, as Jackson and Mercury had been working on several tracks at that time (1981–83), e.g. the unreleased title track “Victory” for the eponymous album and “There Must Be More to Life Than This” from Mr. Bad Guy. The final version featured lead vocals by Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger. “State of Shock” was the last top ten hit for The Jacksons, as well as their last single to be certified gold. The song was later revised by Jagger when he performed it with Tina Turner during their 1985 performance at Live Aid.

Anyone would die for a record that peaked at #3 for weeks on the Hot 100, but by Michael’s standard in 1984, it is an under-performer.
This was the first new single featuring Michael’s vocals after the global whirlwind that was Thriller.
Plus it is a superstar duet with Mick Jagger.
And it debuted at #30 on the Hot 100. The other single to accomplish that earlier in ’84 feat is Michael’s very own Thriller single.
Everyone thought a #1 is in the bag when it cracked the Top 10 in 4 weeks.
But it got stuck at #3, couldn’t nudge past two back-to-back monster movie #1’s…
    When Doves Cry and Ghostbusters

You’re welcome Ric. In my opinion I think this song would have done much better had Freddie Mercury been on the track as originally intended. Still a great one from 84 up against some stiff competition.

I remember reading that Freddie distanced himself from Michael after Michael’s “weird” reports surfaced…oxygen tank and all.
Dunno if that had any bearings in Mick being the replacement.
