T’Pau – Heart And Soul (US 12″)
Posted by DjPaulT on September 22nd, 2012
BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987
“Heart and Soul” is a song by British pop band T’Pau. Featuring vocalist Carol Decker performing overlapping lyrics, the song was released as a single in 1987, taken from the album Bridge of Spies. Following its inclusion in a Pepe Jeans advert, the single reached #4 in both the US and UK charts. Although the 12″ sleeve states “On The Wing” as the b-side it is actually a misprint and does not appear on some copies of US 12″ single.

Your ability to continue with positive surprises is simply amazing.I used to have both Hanging On A Heart Attack (Dance Mix) and Heart And Soul (Dance Mix) on a same cassette recorded from the 12 inches way back in 1987 and you have posted same records almost side by side.Thank you very much Paul.I will often repeat, (as before), in my comments that you are the king of twelve inches (if you don’t mind).

Another of my favourites from 1987. Strange that with this massive hit, they didn’t do much since in the US.
Given the number of times (I think it was three) this was released before it became a smash, there are actually numerous 7″ versions and also two different 12″ mixes if I’m not wrong.
I have the German 12″ myself and I can’t wait to hear if yours is the same remix or a different one. Either way I’m still elated!
Thanks Paul, and my, someone is working overtime this week! Don’t work too hard, my friend.

I have two copies of this 12″ but both have the same mixes. There are several other 7″ versions that you mentioned and I think a shorter club mix. I wonder who got the remix credit as the records don’t say? Yeah thought I would throw in a Saturday post since I missed a lot last week

As a big fan of T’Pau, it’s great to find this 12″ single in your site. There are not many dance mixes of their songs around, let alone on CD, so it’s fab to be able to have these files in super high PAULity!
Thanks!!

The remixes on this are so so good.
Does anyone know any other sites that have FLAC or HQ 12″ singles/Maxis etc?

Burning The Ground is pretty much the best there is. You won’t find another that puts as much time and effort into every post. The rips here are top notch.

Which country is this T’Pau 12″ from. I have the U.S. 12″ and it the dance mix you have presented here is completely different. Most notably is the heavy use of the keyboard riff throughout and ‘dub’ vocals in the middle bridge. The US version I have is much closer to the standard radio single release, just longer and it includes a small acapella section

The one posted here is the US 12″. There were different pressings with misprinted sleeve. My 12″ says it has “On The Wing” but obviously it doesn’t. Also the track durations are different than what is on the labels. Here is the Discogs page for my 12″: http://www.discogs.com/TPau-Heart-And-Soul/release/394394

OK, so to clear up the confusion regarding this release. In the US, Virgin Records America released two versions of this 12″. One with the 4 mixes, as posted here, and one with what has become to be known as the Dance Mix, which is timed at 5:04 and two B sides.
They were released in very similar (almost identical) sleeves.
One version listed the four mixes on the back (2 mixes on side one, 2 mixes on side two).
The other listed just one mix on the A Side (the Dance Mix) b/w On The Wing and Heart and Soul (7″ version) on the B side.
Both sleeves indicate catalog # 0-96779.
The sleeve with the Dance Mix also has a picture of Carol Decker on the back- same pic as the cover of the album, Bridge of Spies. The sleeve with the four mixes does not have a picture on the back side.
The Dance Mix clock in at 5:04 and was produced and mixed my Roy Thomas Baker, who also produced the album. This mix sounds much like the album version, in that it has the big bombastic bass and drums. From what I understand, this was originally planned to be the only remix of the song for the 12″ single. After the song hit big in the States, Virgin Records America ordered some different remixes, done by Cameron Paul and put a second 12″ single out. Someone at Virgin Records America messed up by using the same catalog # for this new release as the original release. I have a few copies of this because they even messed up at the pressing plant and put the wrong version in some of the wrong sleeves.
There is what you see with your copy, Paul. The inserted the wrong single in the wrong sleeve.
I’ll post a pic of the back of the second version of the 12” next.
