Go West – We Close Our Eyes (Total Overhang Mix) (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on August 3rd, 2012

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

US Front Sleeve

“We Close Our Eyes” is a song by British pop band Go West, composed by both members Peter Cox and Richard Drummie. It was the first single from their debut album Go West. “Missing Persons”, also from the album, was the B-side. The single was promoted by a music video directed by Godley & Creme.

The “Total Overhang Club Mix” was later included on the 1985 compilation Bangs & Crashes. The standard version appeared again on Aces and Kings: The Best of Go West in 1993. “We Close Our Eyes” spent fourteen weeks on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 5 in April 1985. In the United States the single reached 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 5 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.

This UK 12″ contains the rare 6:41 “Total Overhang Mix” which includes a string intro. This mix is also known as “Complete Underhang Mix”. As a bonus track I have included the more common “Total Overhang Club Mix” 5:51 which is taken from the US 12″.

In my part of the world it’s either warm or hot, but never that kind of temperature that you talked about Paul! That is scorching by my standards too. I guess you just have to stay indoors or stay in the pool to stay cool!
A cool debut by the cool Go West! This was climbing the UK charts together with Alison Moyet’s The Ole Devil Called Love, Paul Young’s Every Time You Go Away and Nik Kershaw’s Wide Boy. How brilliant the chart is then?!?!?!
It was actually Pat Benatar’s agent who got them hooked up with Chrysalis, but it took three years for this song to finally see the day. Go West originally only wanted a songwriting deal, and Chaka Khan was at one point interested to do this. But aren’t we glad Go West recorded it eventually and we got to see them in Wife-Beaters?
Great that you included both remixes in this post, Paul!
    Thank you!

Awesome, DJPaul. Thank you so much. I’ve been a Peter Cox/Richard Drummie fan for years, but other than “Bangs and Crashes”, never had any of their mixes. Bravo!!!

  13. Clive Says:

Always loved that killer guitar solo in the middle of the remix–one of the first things I ever taught myself to play (at least the slow beginning–the fast stuff? Forget it!). If you get on a Go West kick, I’d be grateful if you did the live UK 12″ of “The King Is Dead” (last single from Dancing On The Couch) with its gorgeous jazzy piano opening. My copy is all crackly and worn to death from years of playing…

Thanks Paul. The mix with the string intro was the mix released in Oz back in the day. Thanks to you I now have a pristine copy. You do some great work.
