The Romantics – Talking In Your Sleep (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on July 11th, 2012

The Romantics is an American New Wave band from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1977. The band adopted the name “The Romantics” because they formed on Valentine’s Day, 1977. The Romantics achieved popularity in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, parts of Asia, Australia, Europe, and Latin America during the first half of the 1980s on the strength of the band’s songs and music videos. They were influenced by 1960s British Invasion rock (most notably the music of The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, The Hollies, and The Rolling Stones).

“Talking In Your Sleep” was the first single released from The Romatics fourth studio album “In Heat” released in 1983. “Talking In Your Sleep” was The Romantics’ biggest chart hit, garnering substantial radio airplay and sales. The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1984. It also went to #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in the U.S., where it remained on top for two weeks. In Australia, Talking in Your Sleep climbed to #14 on the Australian Singles Chart (Kent Music Report). The song’s music video, widely aired at the time on MTV and elsewhere, featured the band performing while surrounded by standing, but seemingly sleeping women who were dressed in lingerie, pajamas, and other sleepwear.

    Hi, Paul

There is a Group in the U.K. called Bucks Fizz who Recoded this in 1984 and it very well for them.

    Thank You Patrick

    DjPaulT Reply:

You’re welcome Patrick. I am familiar with the Bucks Fizz version but I currently do not have it.

    ric Reply:

Yes, Bucks Fizz’s version was a UK Top 20 in 1984 and is a great cover as well.
Tina’s What’s Love Got To Do With It was originally offered to them but they were too slow to pick it up. Shame!

I’ve loved your site for over a year now. 12 inch remixes are what made the 80s. Today’s music doesn’t have the 12 inchers. We still have good producers like Jason Nevins and others who can remix things, but the 12 inch remix that was placed onto vinyl and then the maxi CD singles are the best.

Keep them coming. Do you have a 12 inch of Hungry Eyes by Eric Carmen?

    DjPaulT Reply:

thank you Mike I appreciate your loyalty to BTG 🙂 As far as I can tell there is a 12″ for “Hungry Eyes” but it does not have an extended version. Just the 3:49 mix. Here is the Discogs link: http://www.discogs.com/Eric-Carmen-Tom-Johnston-Hungry-Eyes-Where-Are-You-Tonight/master/139623

Have this 12″ myself but haven’t played it since I don’t even know when!
    Thanks for your rip, Paul.
Love these 80s remixers and 80s remixes.
I remember this climbing the charts with Matthew Wilder’s Break My Stride and Olivia’s Twist Of Fate in late ’83 early ’84. Good times!

  7. Brett Says:

Wasn’t as big here is Australia like ‘What I Like About You’, but it charted pretty well.

  8. Silver Blue Says:

WOW. I’d completely forgotten about this gem. Thank you for providing it in all of its glory, Paul!
