“State of Independence” is a song originally written and recorded by Jon and Vangelis for their 1981 album The Friends of Mr. Cairo.

Donna Summer covered “State of Independence” on her 1982 album Donna Summer produced by Quincy Jones. In 1990 the single was re-released to promote a compilation album titled “The best of Donna Summer”. The single featured fresh remixes by Boilerhouse. The 1990 remix debuted on the UK singles chart on October 11, 1990 and peaked at #45. The song features an all-star choir including among others Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder.

    I never heard these mixes before. I wasn’t expecting the proto-jungle vibe in the double-time percussion of the NRG mix and the ragga bass of the New Bass mix. Both sound like they’re always about to bust into a chopped-up breakbeat, but never do. Fascinating! Thanks!
